New information gives a clearer picture of what happened 75 years ago to Amelia Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan, where they came down and how they likely survived – for a while, at least – as castaways on a remote island.

For decades, pioneer aviator Amelia Earhart was said to have “disappeared” over the Pacific on her quest to circle the globe along a 29,000-mile equatorial route.

Now, new information gives a clearer picture of what happened 75 years ago to Ms. Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan, where they came down and how they likely survived – for a while, at least – as castaways on a remote island, catching rainwater and eating fish, shellfish, and turtles to survive.

The tale hints at lost opportunities to locate and rescue the pair in the first crucial days after they went down, vital information dismissed as inconsequential or a hoax, the failure to connect important dots regarding physical evidence.

The mystery lies on the ocean floor under 17000 feet of water(where it drops off) or on Gardner Island.

The 17,000 feet would only be if she ditched in the ocean off Howland Island. The dept around Howland is 30 feet. The Ocean surrounding Nikumaroro Island is deep (isn't it part of the Solomon Trench? - the section James Cameron just dove in the area was 26,791 feet down).  Depending where she might have landed if the plane was washed off the Atoll at high tide I wonder if it would have taken a storm to wash it into deeper waters as there was a shipwreck on that island that remained visible relic for a long time (per Wiki)  The problem with this Atoll (as with most - if not all - Atolls was lack of water...  In 1939  some wells were successfully dug on Nikumaroro, but that was long after Earhart was believed to have been there.


BTW Cameron next plans to dive even deeper in the Mariana Trench ---- 36 960 feet or 7 miles down.....

IThe last time I checked that 17,000 feet is considered deep.Mathematically, that translates into  3.21969 mi.Nuclear subs cannot reach that depth.
 The record for the deepest dive for a person was 4800 feet.There is no evidence she ditched over Howland Island because as she was flying farther and farther away from Howland Island her radio signals her less and less.The USS Ithica had said her signals were dying and suddenly it disappeared.  Because one of the major mysteries of the Earhart disappearance was the sudden cessation of radio communications the "crashed and sank" followers of the Earhart story believe the sudden cessation of radio communications with the Itasca was, and still is, the prime argument. According to TIGHAR, the numbers 157 and 337 refer to compass headings -- 157degrees and 337 degrees -- and describe a navigation line that passed not only Howland Island, the target destination, but also Gardner Island, now called Nikumaroro.Nikamaroro Island in 1916 it was leased to a Captain Allen, but remained uninhabited until 1938. Amelia Earheart's trip took place 1937, a year before the British arrived at the Island. On December 1, 1938, members of the British Pacific Islands Survey Expedition arrived to evaluate the island as a possible location for either seaplane landings or an airfield.Planes and metal can rust quickly especially in combination of the heat and moisture of the South Pacific.  To verify the hypothesis that the plane landed on Nikumaroro's reef, TIGHAR researchers analyzed tidal condition on the island from July 2-9, the week following Earhart disappearance.However, this suggests it may have landed in the atoll.It emerged that transmission of credible signals occurred in periods during which the water level on the reef was low enough to permit the transmissions. But the weird thing the Battleship Colorado and the Carrier Lexington accompanied by three destroyers came to the same conclusion. There was no evidence .But the naval task force did not expand the search to other neighboring islands and cast a wider net .There were  no floating airplane tires, no debris, no life rafts, no floating bodies or life rafts. There was nothing to be found.You usually find those items but this tends to suggest it was a belly landing in the ocean and it sank quickly.There is a case of an Electra plane sinking in 8 minutes. I have included a newspaper clipping of that article. This could be put in the grey file.The evidence is too open ended and there will be no conclusion until they find 70 year old skeletons on one of these islands.
