LAPD Reports 257 Street Takeovers as New Safety Campaign Launches
Current Staff Aug 6, 2026
LOS ANGELES — Police have responded to 257 street takeovers this year as officials push a new campaign aimed at getting racers off public streets.
Through July 18, LAPD’s Street Racing Task Force had made 251 arrests, issued 789 citations and impounded 293 vehicles.
The Auto Club of Southern California and USC Racing launched the “Off the Streets. On the Track.” campaign Thursday. The effort encourages drivers interested in racing to use legal tracks instead of public streets.
“Illegal street racing is reckless, dangerous and completely preventable,” LAPD Detective Ryan Moreno said. “Enforcement plays a critical role, but prevention is just as important.”
