Report — Trump Tells Donors He Wants Vice President Vance to Win in 2028: ‘We Need to Elect JD’

Amy Furr 6 Aug 2026

President Donald Trump reportedly conveyed to donors during a private conversation in the Oval Office his desire that Vice President JD Vance win the 2028 presidential election.

The reported conversation, according to the Washington Post (WP), happened two weeks ago and the outlet on Thursday cited two individuals who had knowledge of the conversation but spoke on the condition of anonymity.

“At the end of the day, we need to elect JD,” the president reportedly stated.

The news came after Trump said in June that a Republican presidential ticket featuring Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio would be “very unbeatable,” according to Breitbart News.

The WP article continued:

Even as Trump buoyed his vice president to donors in the Oval Office, though, he was still peppering people around him with questions about Vance versus Rubio. One White House official said the president quizzed staff about the two men on a Marine One ride late last month.

An adviser to the president with direct knowledge of Trump’s comment to the donors said that Trump has privately resolved that Vance will be the heir to the GOP, but that it is “too early” to determine when Vance will announce his candidacy or when Trump will publicly endorse him.

Rubio said in May he would be the first person to back Vance if he ran for president in 2028, per Breitbart News.

“I’m going to be in this job for the next two and a half years. I’m going to do that job. I’m going to finish the job for this president. I’m enjoying it very much. I think we’re going to make a lot of good things happen. JD is a very good friend of mine. If JD runs for president. I think he’d be a phenomenal candidate. I’ve said publicly, and I’ll say it again, I’ll be the first person to sign up and support him. I think JD would do great,” Rubio told NBC News.

A poll in June showed Vance and former Vice President Kamala Harris (D) dominating within their own parties among potential 2028 candidates, while Rubio was polling just underneath Vance at the time, per Breitbart News.

The outlet reported in January that “Democrats face persistent internal discord, unresolved strategic debates, and voter skepticism that threatens to complicate their path toward unity and success in the 2028 presidential election.”

Why would JD be a good or great President?

Being Trump's lapdog is not a trait that Americans want in their President.

No.  I'm not a Vance fan. It will be interesting to see who actually runs.  At the end of the day, we're months away from selecting the GOP nominee and I think we can do better than J.D.

I received a solicitation in the mail from him to buy his book "Communion".   I'm not interested and if I were I'd read it for free from my local library.

Note to Trump: Vance will have a better chance if he's running as an incumbent.
So this is how liberty dies...with thunderous applause.

I'd prefer a booming economy with better inflation rates, frankly. Seems like the last time we truly had one was the 2010's.

I like Mr. Vance. But he'd better pay attention to Mr. Trump, so that he may learn what NOT to do...

I don't trust Mr. Rubio (even though he's doing ok as SofS). I just don't.

Ron DeSantis may be the most capable governor in America, but I sense he doesn't have the necessary "right stuff" -- call it charisma or something -- to win a race for the presidency.

If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."     -Ayn Rand-

Think I am converting back to RDS in '28.  I've had enough, and if this is enough of a signal to repudiate recent events, then so be it.

Most intelligent and possibly qualified candidate is Ted Cruz.   Problem is in '16 Trump made the Lyin' Ted moniker/meme stick permanently, and he has no earthly way to shake that.

I am also bullish on Tom Cotton.  He does come off wonky, but ideologically we are almost twins
