John Cornyn Threatens to Sink Todd Blanche as DOJ Will Not Recind Trump IRS Fund

Mariane Angela 29 Jul 2026

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) postponed a Thursday committee vote on Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche’s nomination, his office said Wednesday, after two Republican senators withheld support pending written assurances from the Justice Department on a fund tied to President Donald Trump’s IRS settlement.

A Judiciary Committee spokesperson said the markup was postponed as work continues to secure the votes to favorably report Blanche, framing the delay as an effort to set the nominee up for success rather than failure. The vote, set for 9 a.m. Thursday, had already been pushed back once from the prior week.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), whose vote Blanche needs to clear committee, canceled a meeting with Blanche on Wednesday and had refused to commit his support. Cornyn told reporters Wednesday that the DOJ had not met his demand for written assurances and that he was not prepared to back the nominee.

Cornyn said the fix was simple and that the department was refusing to make it.

“They know what they need to do but they simply refuse to do it,” Cornyn said of the Justice Department.

Lame-Duck Cornyn and Tillis Stall Todd Blanche Over a 'Drafting Exercise'
By Ben Smith | 8:35 AM on July 30, 2026

Two outgoing Republican senators managed to do Wednesday what Democrats could not: stop President Donald Trump's nominee for attorney general before his confirmation reached the Senate floor.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), who lost his Republican primary after Trump backed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, and Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC), who is not seeking reelection, withheld support for Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) then postponed Thursday's committee vote because Blanche lacked sufficient support to advance.

Neither Cornyn nor Tillis will be back for the next Congress. Both are now using the final months of their terms to hold Trump's nominee hostage over wording in the administration's settlement of the president's $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS.

This is why incumbent Republican Senators are losing Primaries.  We can't thin out the deadwood fast enough!

Note to lame (d)ucks who are withholding votes for this nomination.

Every day we don't have an AG is a dim win, and one less day have to prosecute our political enemies who have stolen, lied, and cheated for decades.

Voting against Cornyn this spring was one of most satisfying primary votes in a long time.

But at least we have begun to realize the way to change this country back to its roots is to do so in the primary, rather than another "settling for the least damaging electable person", ie - another RINO.

I just called 4 different offices Cornyn has to speak about this issue with his staff.

Never got through to a person.

All 4 messages I got said that "Senator Cornyn's main line is unavailable to take calls", so I could not even leave a message.

This rogue Senator is not even caring now of representing the people who elected him into office.

He apparently is just working for himself and his bruised ego

Interesting, it used to be when you called a Senator or  Reps office you'd at least get their assistant taking messages.

Trump says he may pull Blanche’s attorney general nomination until dissenting senators leave office
The Associated PressThe Associated Press
AP30 Jul 20261
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said Thursday he may pull acting Attorney General Todd Blanche’s nomination for the full-time post to avoid making concessions to a few Senate Republicans who want him to scale back protections for his family business and potential payouts for his allies that the president negotiated with his own Department of Justice.

Trump doubled down on choosing his former personal lawyer as the nation’s top lawman, calling him “a STAR,” and said he will keep him in the role as acting attorney general until Republican Sens. John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina leave office.

“I have no objection to temporarily withdrawing Todd’s name,” Trump posted on his social media site. “If they do not do the right thing, and putting him back after Cornyn and Tillis are out of office.”https://www.breitbart.com/news/trump-says-he-may-pull-blanches-attorney-general-nomination-until-dissenting-senators-leave-office/
