Food prices in the US have shot up by 33% over the last seven years, the biggest jump in grocery prices in half a century — with no relief in sight.

While rampant inflation was to blame for the biggest surge during the pandemic, prices have continued to soar since, with ground beef best demonstrating the out-of-control market as it hit $6.82 a pound in June, a 79% increase from 2019, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The fact that prices have remained stubbornly high for years means that they are not something Americans can simply weather through, but a new normal for shoppers, said Scott D. Martin, a partner at the Kingsview Wealth Management firm.

“While inflation has cooled from its peak, grocery prices have not returned to where consumers remember them,” Martin told The Post.

“Food prices have effectively reset to a permanently higher level after years of supply chain disruptions, labor shortages, transportation costs, and broad inflationary pressures,” he added.

The new normal was clearly laid out in the US Bureau of Labor Statistics’ records over the last 14 years.

This is bad and getting worse

This is got to  be the worst position an incumbent party finds itself in three months before a midterm


Republicans were already facing headwinds  before this war of choice in Iran. And like the North Vietnamese or the insurgency in Iraq before them,  the Iranian regime  knows  they don’t have to nor can they go toe to toe with the US military to win

Just fire a missile and stay in the news between now and November

Buy loss leaders. When burger goes on sale, (usually for under $5 a pound) we buy 40-50 pounds. Eggs are cheap right now, and we eat lots.
The years of Biden inflation raised the price of most everything. Some things have eased, but for the most part, that increase in prices does not go away if inflation drops.

Inflation is the rate at which prices increase.
It can go to zero, but the prices that reflect the effects of previous years inflation will not go down, they just stay the same.

But Biden's legacy is being blamed on Trump by the usual suspects.

And until the Iran thing is settled, oil prices are not going down.
So inflation will increase for geopolitical reasons that won't go away if we stop dropping bombs because Iran has repeatedly stated intent to control oil (and other cargo) shipping through the Straits of Hormuz.

Trump started it with his first round of "free money" before Biden and hasn't helped himself since, especially with his across-the-board tariffs, interference with the beef industry, and flailing around with the Iranians.

I was just commenting on that very thing at this past Sunday. The little boxes of Kroger brand spaghetti have been $1 each for a long time, but this week it was 3 boxes for $4 ... a 33% increase.
