America’s Current Socialist Trend Could End Badly

That’s because socialism follows an inevitable trajectory. The real question is whether America can reject socialism before a bitter end comes our way.

Allan J. Feifer | July 26, 2026

As J.R. Dunn noted in his July 17th Members Weekly Newsletter (you should subscribe!) in an article titled “Targeting the Socialists,” America’s socialist and socialist-adjacent movements have emerged in four major waves since 1920. Today, we appear to be entering the fifth.

Let’s get one thing out of the way first: you say socialists, I say communists. Why? Because socialism has repeatedly demonstrated that it cannot sustain itself economically. Faced with one failure after another, socialist governments have historically responded by concentrating political power, restricting dissent usually violently, and expanding state control. That is, they start socialist (some private ownership) and end communist (the nationalization of all business and all power concentrated in the state).

In practice, socialism and communism often become different stages of the same process, all ending in enslavement. For this discussion, the distinction matters less than the ultimate destination.

This fifth wave differs from the previous four in one critical respect: it is no longer confined to the political fringe but is moving steadily into the mainstream across multiple geographic areas. Earlier socialist movements struggled to gain lasting influence outside activist circles, academia, and labor organizations, rarely penetrating America’s most influential institutions.

The current movement already possesses significant political power and has established itself within many of the institutions that shape how Americans learn, communicate, and govern. It has accumulated influence simultaneously in education, politics, parts of corporate America, activist organizations, and much of the media, where these institutions increasingly reinforce one another and normalize ideas that only a generation ago would have remained political nonstarters. That institutional foothold is what distinguishes this fifth wave from its predecessors—and what makes it potentially far more dangerous.

Among its most visible political leaders are Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, and Elizabeth Warren. They differ in style and emphasis, but all advocate a substantially larger role for government than has traditionally characterized American political thought.

When has a Socialist trend ended well?

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Indeed. This WILL "end badly".

Because... no matter how much they huff and puff, the Pubbies and "conservatives" will never do what is necessary to prevent the communists from taking power, nor remove them once they have attained it.

Look at the Republican Congress today.
What have they done?
What will they ever do?

Like Western Europe, where ALL the "normal" political parties are hopeless and helpless in the face of advancing islam, will America's only hope be that at some point the "extreme, far right" will attain power and then fight back?

The American future may look much like that of Spain in the 1930's.
Or like Chile in the early 1970's.

And, as in Chile, the only vector by which to overthrow the communists may be "the Pinochet way" as was done there. Or a Generalissimo Franco.

Because the leftists/communists not only have to be removed from power. Steps must be taken to (cough, choke) "go further", to ensure they will not be able to challenge the status quo again.

I'm old.
I have no say in what will happen, other than to be able to see it (seeing the future isn't a blessing -- it's a curse). Recall Leonard Cohen's refrain, "I've seen the future... and it's murder".

I've seen nothing yet from our side that seems strong and certain enough to block the combined advance of communism and islam.
The Republicans aren't going to save us.
I no longer believe that even the Constitution can save us (and is actually working against us).
Who will...?

Unfortunately your predictions are coming true and I have never disagreed with you though I thought your timeline was a bit generous -- your timeline is just about spot on.

Yes, 'they' are using our Constitution against us, as our do nothing GOP Congress continues to sit around and play tiddlywinks.

I'm still praying and hoping for a miracle.
Live in  harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly, do not claim to be wiser than you are.  Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.  If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

Coming to a school district near you:

DSA WANTS TO TURN NYC SCHOOLS INTO MARXIST TRAINING CAMPS. The Democratic Socialists of America are pushing to rewrite New York City’s public school curriculum around a “democratic socialist frame.”
