I really wish we had a Kroger, that was my store of choice when we lived up north. Walmart and Aldi are about the cheapest around here but they don't always carry the freshest produce or items that I want. I feel like I'm being robbed when I shop at Publix -- it's hard to get out of there without spending $75 - 100, it has become ridiculous.

Publix has no real competition -- hello Kroger, you'd make a killing down here!!

Shoppers looking to stretch their grocery budgets may want to take a closer look at Kroger.

The Ohio-based grocer had the cheapest store-brand grocery basket in a new price comparison of four major U.S. grocery chains.

A new study from Restaurant Furniture Plus compared the cost of 15 store-brand essentials at Kroger, Walmart, Aldi and Albertsons, including milk, bread, eggs, chicken breast, spaghetti, canned beans and baking items, Southern Living reported.

Kroger ranked No. 1 with a total basket cost of $30...............

Kroger wipes out plan for 80 stores in Florida - The grocer appears to be pulling out of the state


The Tampa Bay Business Journal reports that a massive expansion of Kroger stores in Florida has been canceled.

The Cincinnati-based grocer recently scrapped plans for 80 Harris Teeter locations in Florida. A Harris Teeter store currently under construction in Jacksonville remains on track to open.

The Harris Teeter rollout also included at least five 65,000-square-foot, high-end stores.

In a statement, Harris Teeter said it does not comment on potential sites or real estate speculation.

Kroger has been retreating in Florida since December, when it terminated a 10-year incentive agreement with Lake County, Fla., after shutting down a fulfillment network facility.

Kroger recently announced plans to acquire Giant Eagle for $1.65 billion, but the deal has little to do with the Florida expansion plans. Giant Eagle operates 197 supermarkets in northern Ohio, western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland and Indiana.

The grocer is eyeing Columbus, Ohio, for store closures as part of the acquisition. The Columbus market appears to include the most overlap, including some locations where Kroger and Giant Eagle stores sit on the same block................

We get groceries delivered, and we alternated between Walmart and Smith's (the Kroger affiliate out here).  The last time we went to order from Smith's, Instacart (who handles Smith's deliveries) had decided to add an unspecified surcharge so we cancelled it and never went back. 

That surcharge would have increased the bottom line cost enough to negate any savings we would have gotten.

I peruse the Kroger and Aldi websites each week, and plan my shopping accordingly. I  think I'm getting the best possible prices, given the limited options in our area.

We get groceries delivered, and we alternated between Walmart and Smith's (the Kroger affiliate out here).  The last time we went to order from Smith's, Instacart (who handles Smith's deliveries) had decided to add an unspecified surcharge so we cancelled it and never went back. 

That surcharge would have increased the bottom line cost enough to negate any savings we would have gotten.

I live in a grocery oasis.  lots of options within 5 miles of my crib.  Publix, Winn Dixie, Whole Foods, Regular Wallyworld and their Market Place store, DG Market, Target and of course a Cost Co and a Sams Club.

We just came back from a trip to Michigan where we shopped a giant Meier store.  I was impressed with it.  Wish they had one down here.

There was.no reason given for the line item, so we just cancelled the entire order.  Poof!  Customer gone!  We dropped them a message why as we left the website and they never responded to get our patronage back.  It cost them a lot, because Smith's was not the only merchant serviced by Instacart.

We just came back from a trip to Michigan where we shopped a giant Meier store.  I was impressed with it.  Wish they had one down here.

Yes, Meier Shifty Takers is a HUGE store.  Much larger than the biggest Walmarts.

I knew this article was about Kroger before I even clicked the link... Smiths/Kroger is definitely bang-for-buck around here... Then maybe Rosaurs (a distant second)... Then maybe SuperOne... Wallyworld is way down the list... Paper products, cleaning supplies, and pet supplies, sure. but their grocery prices ain't all that.

WRT Instacart - I do them too... Since I got my Weeble card, Instacart is my main supply line. You will find a better deal if you actually go through Instacart rather than through Smiths, and sign up for the membership. They take a hard nick anyway, but not as bad if you pay for membership... Then there's the tip on top of that... If you don't pay hard into the tip, you'll get the gumbies that are too dumb to shop... So yeah... Pay hard on the tip.

The only way I make it with Instacart is monthly orders I throw for a 300-350 dollar order... and a tip around 50 bucks to get it shopped and delivered... And for that, I get the premium shoppers, well selected fresh fruit and vegetables, and they bring it right into the kitchen (which I absolutely need) instead of leaving it on the stoop.

If I shop a week... Say 75 bucks or so, it will cost me 20 or 30 bucks in tip, and You will not get at a premium shopper at all, and it will be left on the stoop. totally different experience. Jussayin.

We used to have a Fred Meier up at the B&B before they tore it down. I truly miss that store. That's where the Smiths/Kroger is now.
