NYC’s Mamdani calls Netanyahu a ‘war criminal,’ exploring arrest options: report

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration is discussing whether it can arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he comes to the U.S. in September for the U.N. General Assembly in Manhattan, according to The New York Times.

“I believe that Prime Minister Netanyahu belongs in the Hague,” Mamdani told the newspaper this week, naming the home of the United Nations’ International Court of Justice.

“He’s a war criminal who has been charged by the International Criminal Court,” Mamdani reportedly added, noting, “And what you will find is that is an opinion that is held by many, purely because of what his actions have wrought over these last many years.”

The New York Times reported that Mamdani said he is unclear as to whether he has the legal authority to order police to detain Mamdani, but that he’s in an “active conversation” with the city’s Law Department about the idea.

“Whatever the law allows me to do in New York City, that’s what we will do, but we won’t be writing our own laws to that end,” Mamdani also told The New York Times.

The attack on Israel  on Oct. 7, 23, has been overlooked and in fact cheered on by the Pro Palis in this country and even by some in Congress.

The arrest of Bibi would certainly spark an uprising in this country and I believe that's exactly what the socialist leaders like Madami and Omar want.

U.S. Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., is calling New York City's Democrat Mayor Zohran Mamdani a "clown" pretending to be a "tough guy" for threatening to arrest Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when he arrives in September for a United Nations General Assembly.

Appearing on "Sunday Morning Futures" with Maria Bartiromo on the Fox News Channel, Fetterman said: "Such a tough guy to say that kind of thing. He has no way to do that. Of course, obviously America is not even part of that corrupt [International Criminal] Court. So he's just a clown to even say that. So he won't try that."

Fetterman's advice to the Ugandan-born Islamic mayor is to "just sit down and focus on the problems that they have in New York."

Mamdani told the New York Times on Friday: "I believe that Prime Minister Netanyahu belongs in The Hague. He's a war criminal who has been charged by the International Criminal Court."

Mike Waltz, the U.S. ambassador to the U.N., called Mamdani's threat "pure political theater," saying an arrest is "not going to happen" for four reasons:

"How can you embrace people like that, [who say] that Hamas is 1,000% better than Israel? If we became the kind of party that would embrace someone like Hasan Piker, maybe my party doesn't want like a reasonable, common-sense kind of Democrat that reminds people that standing with Israel that at least used to be part of our core values and one of the reasons I've been proud to be a Democrat."

Trump says Netanyahu 'will not be arrested' in US as Mamdani says ICC warrant 'should be honored'

President Donald Trump declared Monday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "will not be arrested, in any way, shape, or form" while visiting the United States, a response that comes as New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the International Criminal Court's (ICC) arrest warrant against the Israeli leader "should be honored."

In a Truth Social post, Trump praised Netanyahu for "fighting against the Islamic Republic of Iran" and argued that Iranian leaders — not the Israeli prime minister — are the ones who should face arrest.

"The only ones that should be arrested are the people that led Iran into this unprecedented SPIRAL OF DEATH AND DESTRUCTION, something that should have been dealt with years ago, by previous Presidents! " Trump wrote.

Trump's post came as Mamdani was asked by Fox News during an unrelated press conference about whether Netanyahu should be arrested if he visited New York City.

Mamdani said Netanyahu is "the subject of an International Criminal Court arrest warrant" over alleged crimes against humanity and war crimes. He said those allegations are "facts of public record" and that ICC warrants "should be honored," whether they involve Netanyahu, Russian President Vladimir Putin "or whomever else."

Pressed further, Mamdani stopped short of saying his administration would arrest Netanyahu, instead saying New York City would "follow all applicable local laws."

The ICC issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu in November 2024 over allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the fighting in Gaza.

The U.S. is not a member of the ICC.

Last week, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced efforts to combat the international body, with the State Department saying that the ICC "poses an intolerable threat to U.S. sovereignty."

"The ICC now seeks to become the unaccountable global arbiter – positioning itself above and beyond the nation state as a supranational enforcement arm of a globalist bureaucracy empowered to persecute American servicemen and officials at will," the State Department said in its announcement. "No diplomatic option will be off-limits in the campaign to dismantle the threat posed by the ICC to Americans."
