Whoever Assigns the Word Wins

How “patriotism” and “nationalism” stopped being ideas and became a scoring system, used by newsrooms and politicians alike.

The Last Wire

Every organization runs on language.

The first person to define a problem often shapes how everyone else responds to it. Labels become assumptions. Assumptions become decisions.

Whether you’re leading a company, managing a team, negotiating a contract, or communicating during a crisis, understanding how words frame reality is a competitive advantage.

My latest article examines why controlling definitions has become one of the most powerful communication strategies of our time, and what leaders can learn from it.

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

I have these scheduled to post at 10 AM. It’s automatic. Them the distribution pops up (Facebook. LinkedIn) and those are also pretty automated.

But TBR… 🤦🏻‍♂️ I have to format every time. I had my eyes dilated at 10 AM. I couldn’t see the screen to get this on here for the life of me.

Frustrating.

Pay attention.

I’m reading/hearing “silence is complicity” everywhere.

That is part of this.

No one can stay neutral.

@Luis Gonzalez

Yet another superior, well-reasoned and useful piece. Thank you.

In exploring a specific category of linguistic manipulation - patriotism vs. nationalism - you have done much more than expose how journalists and politicians alike subvert language to promote a preferred narrative.

We already knew that.

Of more value, what you have accomplished is to explain the technique by which target audiences are subtly led to draw a preferred conclusion, often without making a conscious choice.

Such linguistic legerdemain is akin to a magician's art: it involves careful framing, misdirection, and substitution.

And by and large: it works. Unless you know what to look for.

Keep up the great work.
"If all men are created equal, that is final. If they are endowed with inalienable rights, that is final. If governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, that is final. No advance, no progress can be made beyond these propositions. If anyone wishes to deny their truth or their soundness, the only direction in which he can proceed historically is not forward, but backward toward the time when there was no equality, no rights of the individual, no rule of the people."    -Calvin Coolidge

The first ...  to define a problem ... shapes how everyone responds to it

This is the essence of our politics ----  and such definitions are clever, pithy, collaborative and repeated ad nauseam.  This is also known as co-opting an agenda. It is an immeasurable talent --- and one that has not yet found its way into the conservative wheelhouse.
