5 killed, 23 hurt in least violent July Fourth weekend in at least 7 years
Five people were killed and 23 were hospitalized in shootings, assaults or stabbings throughout Chicago from 5 p.m. Thursday through 5 a.m. Monday, according to the Chicago Police Department.

Chicago saw its least violent Fourth of July weekend in at least seven years, continuing a two-year decline in violent crime victims during the Independence Day weekend.

Five people were killed and 23 were hospitalized in shootings, assaults or stabbings throughout the city between 5 p.m. Thursday and 5 a.m. Monday, according to the Chicago Police Department.

That’s down from the nine people killed and 40 injured during last year’s July Fourth weekend, and the 19 killed and 86 injured during the same weekend in 2024.


While Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed thankfulness for a safer Fourth of July than in recent years, the work to reduce citywide violence is “far from over,” he said.
