Iran strikes on CIA facilities prompt questions about possible Russian role

Jonathan Landay, Gram Slattery and Timour Azhari  |  July 22, 2026  |  1:31 PM CDT

WASHINGTON/RIYADH, July 22 (Reuters) - Iranian drone attacks on CIA facilities in the Gulf have prompted U.S. intelligence analysts to investigate whether Russia assisted by providing targeting information or advanced drone technology, said four people familiar with U.S. intelligence.

Reuters and other media have reported — and U.S. officials have acknowledged — that Russia has provided targeting and other support for Iran in its strikes on U.S. targets in the Gulf region generally, but the intelligence community's investigation of possible Russian involvement in supporting the CIA facility attacks has not been previously disclosed.

At least two CIA sites were struck in March, Reuters and other outlets have reported. One of the facilities was the CIA station in Saudi Arabia, which is located in the U.S. embassy in Riyadh, and a separate site was located in eastern Iraq. Some of the sources said additional CIA sites had been hit, but they did not disclose details. These people, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss national security matters, said U.S. intelligence officials have ‌not yet reached firm conclusions about the possible Russian involvement in the attacks on CIA facilities. But they cited the strikes' effectiveness and apparent precision, as well as Russia's broader technical support for Iran, as possible evidence.

RUSSIA HELPED TARGET FACILITIES: INTELLIGENCE MEMO

One internal memo from a Western intelligence agency, described by an official in the region with access to the document, concluded Russia has likely played a role in targeting regional CIA facilities. The official discussed the memo on condition that its precise authorship not be disclosed.

Two Western officials in the Gulf who were briefed on intelligence reports said analysts thought the Saudi attack involved a pair of Russian-enhanced versions of Iran's Shahed drones. One of the aircraft blew a hole through a vulnerable part of the embassy's exterior and the second flew through the opening and detonated, they said.  .  .

The U.S. is moving forces, weapons and medics to the Middle East to give President Donald Trump broader military options, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.

Citing officials, the outlet said the recent "surge" in forces and assets comes as Trump considers widening the conflict against Iran.

Special operations forces have deployed to the region from their U.S. bases, according to flight-tracking data and U.S. officials, the report said.

Squadrons of jet fighters have also been staged across the Middle East.

Bomber aircraft at bases in the U.S. and U.K. are on high alert to ramp up operations, one official said.

Hmmmm...if true then the Russians actually crossed a really big red line in the intelligence world, in which all the National agencies more or less agree to not kill each others' professional officers and field agents...i.e. live and let live...to avoid a "spy war" and "mutually assured destruction" in the espionage world.

And it's also verboten for the agencies' to target and attack each others' stations in their embassies.

Perhaps, but in Ukraine, I'm not aware of CIA agents actively trying to kill Russian GRU and FSB officers inside their embassy stations and field offices.

Big difference in "spycraft."  There are actually unspoken and unwritten "rules" therein going back to the early days of the Cold War, and the Russians apparently have broken them.

U.S. Central Command, which is leading the ongoing military operation against Iran, released a photo on social media of a U.S. Air Force F-16 fighter jet taking off from a base in the Middle East.

"U.S. forces remain vigilant," CENTCOM wrote in the Thursday morning social media post.

Overnight, U.S. forces completed the 12th consecutive night of strikes on Iran, targeting maritime capabilities, missile and drone storage facilities, coastal surveillance sites, and air defense assets, according to CENTCOM.

Since the war began on Feb. 28, 18 U.S. service members have been killed. This week, the U.S. identified two soldiers killed in an Iranian attack on a base in Jordan: 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan, 25, and Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, 19.

Houthis Claim Two Attacks on Red Sea Saudi Oil Tankers as U.S. Completes 12th Night of Strikes

BREITBART
by Simon Kent
23 Jul 2026

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels claimed dual attacks on Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea early Thursday morning as the U.S. military conducted a 12th straight night of strikes against Iran infrastructure – military and civil.

AP reports fighting for control of vital shipping lanes in the Gulf region shows no sign of lessening and if anything is now broadening with Houthi involvement opening up a new chokepoint across the Red Sea.

Energy prices are rising globally as a result as supply lines tighten for a host of other materials and oil prices hit a six-week high.

AP notes U.S. Central Command said its strikes were designed to “further degrade Iran’s ability to threaten civilian mariners and commercial vessels transiting regional waters,” as the Americans push to regain control over the Strait of Hormuz and restore the flow of international shipping.

President Donald Trump warned earlier Wednesday one bridge or power plant will be targeted by U.S. strikes each time Iran shoots at a ship in the contested Strait of Hormuz, as Breitbart News reported.

“From this point forward, any time the Islamic Republic of Iran shoots at a ship in the Strait of Hormuz, whether it be by Missile, Rocket, Drone, or any other device or weapon, the United States will bomb and destroy ONE BRIDGE OR POWER PLANT, including those located next to, or in, the Capital City of Tehran,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

Listening to Glenn Beck the past couple of days and he is absolutely correct; war IS dangerous but this is the most dangerous war of our lifetimes.

IMO we are on a tipping scale. If we don't control Iran, Iran will inevitably eventually strike us here at home and the retaliation from Iranian terrorists within our country will be absolutely relentless.

4 Republicans help House Democrats pass Iran war powers resolution

The Hill
by Sudiksha Kochi and Sarah Davis
07/23/26

The House on Thursday passed a Democratic-backed war powers resolution aimed at limiting President Trump’s military action in Iran.

The lower chamber voted 214-208 to pass the resolution, sponsored by Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.). Four Republicans joined all Democrats in supporting the measure: Reps. Tom Barrett (Mich.), Warren Davidson (Ohio), Thomas Massie (Ky.) and Brian Fitzpatrick (Pa.).

The latest push comes amid a rising death toll among U.S. service members during renewed fighting between the U.S. and Tehran. Eighteen troops have died since the U.S. and Israel launched joint strikes against Iran in February.

“This is a vote of conscience. This is a vote that requires us to find the strength to do what is right for the American people, and to send the clearest, even stronger message to this president of the United States that the United States Congress, the House of Representatives, is reasserting our authority over war. This war must end,” Jayapal said in remarks on the House floor Wednesday ahead of the vote.

Both chambers of Congress approved similar resolutions last month, indicating growing frustrations from lawmakers over the Trump administration’s handling of the conflict.

The same four House Republicans joined all Democrats in voting for a war powers resolution in June. GOP Sens. Rand Paul (Ky.), Susan Collins (Maine), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) and Bill Cassidy (La.) backed a war powers resolution that same month over in the Senate.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) announced in remarks Wednesday that Senate Democrats will force a war powers resolution on the floor Thursday.

‘A politically impossible situation’: New poll shows Trump voters losing patience with Iran war

https://www.politico.com/news/2026/07/22/poll-maga-souring-iran-war-costs-trump-01006976

Quote
Half of President Donald Trump’s MAGA base thought the Iran war was worth its economic costs in May. Now, just a little more than a third do.

That precipitous, 13-point drop in just two months, according to a new POLITICO Poll, reveals how the president’s most die-hard supporters are starting to agree with the majority of Americans who have long opposed the U.S.’ involvement in the war.

Additionally, 37 percent of self-identified MAGA Trump voters say the U.S. should continue its involvement only if it doesn’t increase costs, up from 29 percent who said the same in May, according to the survey, conducted by independent polling firm Public First. Nearly 1 in 5 MAGA voters believe that the U.S. should end its war in Iran, regardless of the costs.

(snip)

The White House is “at a maximum level of frustration right now, and I was told by very senior people that the president is now fully aware that the only way to the victory that he wants is completely politically impossible. The American people just will not support the kind of escalation it would take at this point,” said one person close to the White House, granted anonymity to discuss private conversations. “We’ve got more dead Americans and a politically impossible situation.”

(snip)

The mood among White House staff and their outside allies is grim as the president grapples with finding a path out of an unpopular and expensive war three months from a midterm election expected to turn on cost of living issues.

The president was expected to spend the year on a victory tour on affordability issues, touting his popular tax cuts, Trump accounts for newborns and lower drug prices. Instead, a domestic travel schedule has been pocked by visits to Dover Air Force Base to oversee the dignified transfer of the remains of more than a dozen dead soldiers, and he has during his campaign-style rallies been forced to time and again argue to the American people that the price of war — most salient to higher prices at the pump — was worth ending Iran’s nuclear program.

EXCERPT

Trump really screwed the pooch back in April when he agreed to the Pakistanis' request for peace talks and stopped the strategic bombing.

I wonder if this is still true...

'I don't care about the midterms': Trump makes clear he's in no rush to reach deal with Iran

https://abcnews.com/Politics/care-midterms-trump-makes-clear-rush-reach-deal/story?id=133357778

President Donald Trump said during a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday that he isn't concerned about making a deal soon with Iran, adding that he doesn't "care about the midterms" in what he said he thinks is the regime’s calculation that he has to negotiate a deal before what are expected to be highly-competitive elections in November.

"They thought they were going to out-wait me, you know. 'We'll out-wait him. He's got the midterms.' I don't care about the midterms."

Iran flew IRGC commanders, equipment to Yemen before Houthi attacks on Saudi ships: report

Tehran flew Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commanders and missile and drone-related equipment to Yemen ahead of this week's Houthi attacks on Saudi ships, Reuters reported Thursday.

Citing sources, the outlet said that between 10 and 21 IRGC personnel, including senior commanders, were aboard a Mahan Air flight from Tehran to Yemen on July 13.

"The IRGC commanders traveled there to support Houthi operations and provide training on new missile systems," one source told Reuters.

President Donald Trump on Thursday said he was "very disappointed" in the Houthis for attacking two Saudi ships earlier this week.

Chris Murphy says Senate Democrats will force votes on ending Iran war 'week after week'

Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., told reporters that his colleagues will attempt to bring War Powers resolutions to the Senate floor "week after week" until they can succeed in ending U.S. engagement in Iran.

"We're going to continue to force these votes in the Senate week after week after week. And as we've seen, more and more Republicans every single time we bring these votes, are voting to end the war," Murphy said immediately after one such resolution failed in the Senate on Thursday.

"I think as we get closer to the election, there are going to be more and more Republicans in the House and in the Senate who are going to be willing to vote to end this war because it is deeply unpopular by a two, or three to one margin," Murphy added.

Murphy said he hoped more Republicans voting with Democrats on this issue "will convince the president to end this disastrous illegal war."

UN says Middle East situation is 'out of control'

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East has pushed the region to the "edge of the unimaginable."

"The situation is getting out of control. It is teetering on the edge of the unimaginable. The region is being pulled into an ever-widening circle of confrontation. One crisis feeds another. One escalation triggers the next," Guterres told a Security Council meeting.

"As this dynamic spreads, the political objectives are becoming increasingly obscured by the confrontation itself," he added.

Thursday on CNN’s “The Situation Room,” Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX) said the Trump administration should let the military “do what they do best and then negotiate from the rubble.”

France calls Houthi strikes 'a serious escelation'

France has condemned the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen for their fresh wave of strikes on Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea.

"Houthi attacks on Saudi ‌tankers are irresponsible and a serious escalation," a ‌French ‌Foreign Ministry spokesperson told reporters on Wednesday.

With shipping largely halted in the Strait of Hormuz, the Red Sea has served as an alternative export route for Saudi oil. The Houthis announced a maritime blockade in the region earlier this week and claim to have targeted two oil tankers.

Trump threatens 'major military punishment' after Houthi ship attacks

US President Donald Trump has threatened to strike Yemen and Iran if the Iran-backed Houthi rebels continue to attack ships in the Red Sea.

"A year ago the United States of America attacked, very powerfully, the Houthis, for their interference with commerce and trade, by shooting at ships. Since that time, and during our conflict with Iran, they have acted very responsibly. Unfortunately, now they are starting up again, shooting at two Saudi Arabian ships last night," Trump posted on his Truth Social platform.

"If they do this again, the US will hold Iran responsible, in that the Houthis are a surrogate and/or proxy of Iran, and major military punishment will be inflicted upon Iran and, of course, the Houthis themselves."

Trump added that he was "very disappointed" with the Houthis because "they have, until now, acted very professionally and smart."

Attacking shipping from Yemen should carry the same penalty as attacking shipping through the Strait of Hormuz...The bombing of bridges in Tehran.  Iranians are directly responsible for both, and there's not much worth bombing in Yemen!

Houthis 'snookered' into joining US-Iran conflict — Rubio

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that he believed that Yemen's Houthi rebels had been tricked into joining the conflict with the United States by Tehran.

"The Houthis largely were smart and stayed out of all this throughout the conflict, but they now apparently have gotten themselves suckered into this, going after Saudi Arabia and their ships," Rubio told reporters on the sidelines of a summit of the ASEAN Southeast Asian bloc in Manila, the Philippines.

"I hope they will de-escalate, because I think the Houthis, frankly, got snookered into this thing by the Iranians," he said.

The militant group controls much of Yemen's most populous areas, including the capital, Sanaa, and is allied with Iran. It already began threatening merchant ships in the Red Sea in response to Israel's offensive in Gaza in 2023.

The top US official also accused Iran of going back on its commitments in peace talks.

"These people make deals ‌and then they break ‌it almost immediately or they decide, 'oh, let's change the deal'. That's not how deals work," he said.

"So now they're paying the price for it. And maybe they'll change ‌their mind here over the next few days as they continue to suffer great losses," Rubio added.

He said he believed Iran was not yet ready for a deal with Washington but said it might be soon, while also reiterating the US' position that Iran should be "denuclearized." Iran maintains its nuclear program is exclusively for civilian purposes.

Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump declared that a previous ceasefire deal with Iran was "over."

I wonder if any of them has considered that one of the first places Iran will nuke is Washington, D.C.?  But then, how often are they actually present in the Capital?--especially in an election year?

They will run like rats when the Iranians nuke their long standing number one US target: NYC, closely followed by Chicago.

German military says it will withdraw vessels from Red Sea

Germany's navy is expected to move two vessels from the Red Sea region to the eastern Mediterranean "in the coming days," a Defense Ministry statement said.

The ministry said it was pulling the ships due to "the volatile political situation... and the absence of any foreseeable near-term start of operations" in the Strait of Hormuz.

The ministry added that keeping the vessels deployed in the region indefinitely "represented a strain on their technical systems."

The two vessels would be "kept in a state of readiness for deployment" and would return to the Middle East "as soon as reliable indicators for an imminent start of the mission are in place," the statement read.

According to the AFP news agency, the ships in question are the "Fulda" minesweeper and the "Mosel" supply ship currently in Djibouti waters.

Trump's three-word threat as Iran opens up new front and oil surges to $100 per barrel

Daily Mail
By PHILLIP NIETO
23 July 2026

Iran-backed Houthi rebels have bombed ships in the Red Sea, opening up a terrifying new front in Donald Trump's war and prompting the President to threaten 'major military punishment.'

The latest escalation in the Middle East has sent oil prices rocketing above $100 per barrel for the first time in two months.

Yemen's militant group claimed attacks on two Saudi tankers Wednesday night - their first strike since declaring a blockade on the kingdom's shipping earlier this week.

The Houthis fired on the vessels for breaching their embargo in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which is responsible for around 7 percent of the global oil trade.

It came as US forces carried out a 12th consecutive night of strikes on Iran, prompting Trump to threaten additional 'punishment' on both Tehran and the Houthis.

The US has escalated its air campaign with B-1 bomber strikes on Revolutionary Guard targets. The costly aircraft can haul two dozen 2,000lb bombs or dozens of cruise missiles.

Analysts warn the rebels could cut off Saudi Arabia's alternative export route through the Red Sea known as the East-West Pipeline.

If Iran's disruption is successful, it could tighten global supplies at a time when stockpiles are already running low.

The squeeze is expected to reach household budgets within weeks due to higher crude prices pushing up the cost of gas, flights and everyday goods. Europe also faces economic turmoil from Tehran widening the war because the continent relies on Saudi diesel shipped through the Red Sea.

They only need to hit us once to throw us into a complete panic (and rightfully so), since Alaska is closer and has military bases I see that state as their first target followed by FL home to Trump and his family, then DC and NYC.

Regardless, they hit us with a nuke and its game over anyways.

IMO they already have nuclear capabilities, just not the ability to reach where they want to.

Any trouble caused by the Iranian War in the midterms are entirely the fault of Trump's arrogance. He was sure that he, Trump, could make what he calls 'a good deal' with Satan himself. That is how confident he was of his 'miraculous' deal-making charms.

He had the ability to close the whole episode out during Epic-Fury. But he blinked first. Trump halted the winning operation just as it was on the verge of victory. He did this because he thought he could make a rational civilized 'deal' with fanatical suicidal end-of-the-world religious zealots and primitive murderous savages.

Then, he became literally obsessed with 'making a deal'. He was captivated and paralyzed by this compulsion. Meanwhile, as Iran was rearming and regrouping for the next battle, Trump was stubbornly fixated on the idea that Iran can be dealt with through deal-making. This was against the advise of almost ALL of his military advisors and most of his political advisors.

This led to Trump granting seemingly endless 60 day ceasefires one after the other which Iran, of course, ignored entirely and simply used them to rebuild and rearm.

It is wonderful that Trump has finally realized the kind of irrational people he is dealing with. It is wonderful that he is doing what came to be commonly known as 'finish the job'. But the fact that it has lasted so long and has come so close to the midterms is entirely Trump's fault. Trump is the reason this operation has been delayed for so many months.

Trump's soul became possessed by Jimmy Carter. Trump was sure that if he was 'nice' to Iran, that Iran would return the favor, even though so many people close to him were telling him it would never work. Trump's vanity did not allow him to accept the fact that the mighty phenomenal deal-maker Trump, could fail to make a deal. Trump did not want to defeat Iran militarily. In his mind, this was too easy. Trump wanted to defeat them with a signature Trump deal, and this was Trump's folly.

Trump Readies ‘Massive Attack’ On Iran: ‘Bigger Than Ever’

Trending Politics
By Staff
July 23, 2026

President Donald Trump said Thursday he is nearing a decision on dramatically expanding U.S. military operations against Iran as oil prices climbed to their highest level in nearly two months and Tehran-backed Houthi rebels launched fresh attacks in the Red Sea.

“I am considering a massive attack. Bigger than ever before,” Trump told Axios. “I am close to making a decision. We are all set for it.”

Trump also said Iran remains interested in negotiating but argued the regime has not yet suffered “enough pain” to come to the table on acceptable terms.

The president did not indicate when he expects to make a final decision.

The latest comments come as the conflict with Iran intensifies following the collapse of the fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran.

Oil prices surged above $100 per barrel Thursday for the first time since May 26 as fears of a wider regional conflict rattled global energy markets.

They already have a sample of the HK-1 North Korean ICBM which can hit anywhere in the US. During 0bama they concentrated on warhead design because that was not included in any understanding, only ICBM delivery systems were off limits. That has now been rectified as the Iranian Parliament just voted to go full steam ahead on producing ICBMs.
