Heartbreak for Hakeem Jeffries: Another 'Democratic' Socialist Topples an Incumbent—This Time in Colorado
By Sister Toldjah | 10:38 PM on June 30, 2026

After two Mamdani-backed, card-carrying members of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) political party won their respective House primaries last Tuesday in New York, all eyes turned to Colorado's 1st Congressional District Democrat primary, which featured longtime incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette facing off against DSA member Melat Kiros.

The primary was Tuesday night, and, with 78 percent reporting as of this writing, Decision Desk HQ has called it for Kiros in what may be the biggest primary upset for an incumbent Democrat House member this midterm election cycle.

DeGette, 68, is Colorado's longest-serving member of Congress, having been in office since 1997 in a district drawn for Democrat victories. Though she faced two opponents in the primary, the one who worried establishment Democrats the most was Kiros, a 29-year-old lawyer and former barista who, like many other DSA candidates, was backed by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).

Limousine Liberal Dems needs to stop eating foie gras in the Hamptons, on Nantucket, and on Martha's Vineyard, and get to work saving their jobs and livelihoods.  Their soft country club hands are adverse to doing the menial drudgery of campaigning in primaries.

Dems may take back the House and possibly Senate  this year but this is a 1964/1972 esq recipe for disaster in 2028 if they nominate someone outside the mainstream ala Goldwater-McGovern and their platform is far far left which is what the progressives will push.
The DSA is winning in the deep blue areas but it is the purple areas where won't be successful. Try telling suburban moms you're going to take away their SUVs and jack up their taxes .....

After the 1984 disaster of Walter "Where's the beef?" Mondale and the 1988 disaster of Michael Stanely "Il Duce" Dukakis, the DNC created their Super Delegate scheme to rescue the party from the McGovern wing of the party.

The adults in the DNC may have to come up with a newer scheme to make some Dem Convention delegates more equal than others ... Super Duper Mega Ultra Regal Delegates.

Remember the powers that be in the Dem party gave us Kamala "no primary" Harris and you saw how that turned out...
Right now, those who would be super delegates are kowtowing to the radicals and are reluctant to criticize or they themselves get primaried....

No real competitive Dem primary in 2016 - fixed by Hillary and her henchman, Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

Dems called off primary competition in 2020 to coalesce around Biden after South Carolina.

Biden was supposed to be a single-term placeholder, but, Biden being Biden, he ran for a second term.  This meant there would be no competitive 2024 Dem Primary.  George Clooney stated the obvious, and Nancy Pelosi had to appoint Kamala as the nominee.

The last competitive Dem Primary was 2008, when an upstart Obama dethroned Her Inevitable Highness, Queen Hillary.  Hillary made damn sure that wouldn't happen again when she ran for President in 2016, thus, the 2016 Dem Primary fix was in.

The rise of the DSA is akin to the rise of the Tea Party.  The political estbablishments kept a lid on internal competition that alienated upcoming younger members who responded by mounting internal insurgencies against Party Establishment.

Biden's policies made things worse for two Dem constiuencies - college students/recent graduates and working-class minorities.  The limousine liberal crowd loved the offshore windfarms, until one befouled beaches in Nantucket.

Hillary Clinton's propensity to insult large Dem constituencies (deplorables, young ignorants) didn't help.

As long as Pelosi, the Clintons, Biden, and Obama keep hogging the Dem limelight for themselves and their self-interests (aka Legacies), the Dem kids won't be alright.
