I just saw this on FNC.  Mrs. Liberty told me those were severe quakes, and it's rare to have two Majors so close together in time.  There will be devastating casualties.   8888crybaby

Two major, back-to-back earthquakes struck northern Venezuela on Wednesday, reducing buildings to rubble in the nearby capital of Caracas.

An initial earthquake at about 6 p.m. Eastern time, a 7.2-magnitude foreshock, was followed less than a minute later by a 7.5-magnitude earthquake in the same area, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The epicenters, which USGS estimated to be about 3 miles apart, were near the town of Morón on Venezuela's Caribbean coast, some 100 miles west of Caracas.

"When the earthquakes are this close together" in time, said Paul Earle, a seismologist at USGS, "it can be difficult to unravel the exact magnitudes and the exact locations, especially for the second event," due to the way the signals on seismograms overlap in these cases.

The famous Hotel Edward in La Guaira collapsed with the families of a professional baseball team inside.
Family members of the Dolphins baseball team, Gorkys Hernández and Eliézer Alfonzo, and others died in the collapse.

The strongest quake to hit Venezuela in more than a century could not have come at a worse time for the country.

The Latin American nation’s once-booming economy had already been crippled by years of US-led sanctions, hyperinflation, government corruption and mismanagement of the oil sector, despite sitting on the world’s largest oil reserves. Its GDP has shrunk by roughly 80% since 2013.  ...

For now, at least 32 people are dead and 700 injured, and the number of casualties is expected to rise, Rodriguez said.

Early modeling from the US Geological Survey estimates there will most likely be economic losses between $10 billion and $100 billion – the upper figure roughly the size of the entire Venezuelan economy.

Beyond crumbled buildings, the strong shaking caused by the quakes could also spark fires by rupturing gas lines or damaging electrical systems, said Dr. Lucy Jones, a seismologist at the California Institute of Technology.   ...

Venezuela Earthquakes Kill at Least 32 with Rising Death Toll Predicted

Acting President of Venezuela Delcy Rodríguez said the two deadly back-to-back earthquakes that struck the nation Wednesday left at least 32 confirmed dead and over 700 injured, according to the reports national authorities.

According to information from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), there is a high probability the final death told could end up in the thousands — an amount significantly higher than the latest official reports from the Venezuelan socialist regime.

Rodríguez delivered the latest official death toll count during an emergency early Thursday morning broadcast as other reports of major earthquakes came in from across the world.

An infographic titled ‘Major earthquakes along the Pacific Ring of Fire over the last 24 hours’ created in Ankara, Turkiye on June 25, 2026. (Photo by Yasin Demirci/Anadolu via Getty Images)

She warned, however, that the death toll could end up being much higher than the current estimates, as it does not include any potential casualties at the state of La Guaira — a region now deemed a “disaster zone” by the nation’s authorities.

Venezuela rocked by strongest earthquakes in over a century, fears up to 100K deaths — Trump vows US ‘ready, willing and able to help’
 By Zoe Hussain

Venezuela was rocked Wednesday afternoon by its strongest earthquakes in over a century — causing widespread destruction with fears of as many as 100,000 casualties.

A magnitude-7.2 quake struck roughly 100 miles west of Caracas, followed just 39 seconds later by an even bigger 7.5-magnitude temblor, according to the US Geological Survey.

“High casualties and extensive damage are probable, and the disaster is likely widespread,” the USGS warned — estimating that the death toll could climb to at least 10,000, and potentially 100,000.

As of early Thursday, at least 164 people had been confirmed killed and almost 1,000 others injured, acting President Delcy Rodriguez said.

Chaotic footage posted to social media captured terrified people scrambling to safety and shielding their families as ceiling panels collapsed and sparks flew at Maiquetia International Airport.

Videos also showed baseball players and onlookers running into the field during a game in Caracas as the quake hit, shaking power lines and stadium seats.

Horrific. I suspect some of the islands off the coast of Venezuela will have sustained damage. The epicenter was not too far from Trinidad. I spent 13 months there back in the day.

I worked on the Hilton resort kitchen design and build-out on Isla Margarita years ago. I was saddened to hear about today’s earthquake and hope everyone there is safe.

When Maduro was disappeared, his Vice President took over.  She was just as bad as Maduro, but she read the handwriting on the wall pretty quickly.  I don't think we'll see a big Madurista movement any time soon.

That's likely proof that overcoming decades of Communist mismanagement is more challenging that two earthquakes at Richter > 7.5.

Sure, we have natural disasters where I am. But usually there is shelter against them. I can't even to imagine the earth rocking and rolling under my feet and buildings crashing down around me.

I have a friend that was in Acapulco during an earth quake. She said it was terrifying.

He has stated the US is ready to assist any way we can.  Usually one of the first things we do is dispatch a nuclear Aircraft Carrier to electrify everything we can to get Hospitals up and running.
Not to mention providing potable water. That infrastructure had to have suffered, and with the likely casualties, surface water will be bad in no time.

This is bad, but add an epidemic of disease from bad water, and it would be even worse.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

I am sure Isis, Russia, and China are lining up to help / s

That was their friends for the last few years !

Yeah, I am a little ticked at the whole region. I see heartbreaking scenes and remember the area spit at us for decades now. It is the small people that always get hurt the most (yet are most likely to support communism/socialism).

How am I suppose to feel... It's so dang complicated when communists are involved.

Trump administration pledges $150M in aid, deploys Navy warships after deadly Venezuela earthquakes
The rare earthquake 'doublet' turned La Guaira into a disaster zone and forced closure of Simón Bolívar International Airport
 By Alexandra Koch Fox News

Following a catastrophic set of earthquakes that left at least 235 people dead in Venezuela, the Trump administration has activated a government-wide humanitarian response, pledging $150 million in aid and deploying U.S. Navy warships to assist in life-saving rescue operations.

The rapid mobilization Thursday comes after back-to-back magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes rocked northern Venezuela roughly 120 miles west of Caracas Wednesday night.

The rare earthquake "doublet" injured more than 940 people and turned the state of La Guaira into a disaster zone, while forcing the closure of the damaged Simón Bolívar International Airport, according to Venezuela’s Health Ministry.

The U.S. Department of State announced on Thursday it is mobilizing $150 million in aid, which includes $50 million in new bilateral awards for relief partners on the ground — such as Samaritan’s Purse, Catholic Relief Services and World Vision — along with a $100 million contribution to a United Nations humanitarian pooled fund.

To spearhead efforts on the ground, the State Department has deployed a regional Disaster Assistance Response Team alongside two highly specialized urban search-and-rescue teams from fire departments in Fairfax County, Virginia, and Los Angeles County, California.

I just saw this on FNC.  Mrs. Liberty told me those were severe quakes, and it's rare to have two Majors so close together in time.  There will be devastating casualties.   8888crybaby

Same here.  As far as seismic events, I have seen reports twin 6's in the past.   Simultaneous 7 1/2's?  No wonder I am reading that there are 10,000's missing.

If it was a holiday, and people were at home, looking at pancaked buildings just indicates that those deep in those piles are likely dead or will be before rescue efforts can get to them.

It's likely that the current known death toll will be off by a factor of ten or more.

May Almighty God help those people.

If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."     -Ayn Rand-
