Why aren’t gas prices falling? Trump wants answers.
June 24, 2026 | Vivek Saxena

President Donald Trump has instructed the Department of Justice to probe oil companies for not reducing their rates in line with falling costs.

The president revealed this in a Truth Social post published late Wednesday in which he accused the companies of price gouging.

“The big Oil Companies are not dropping their price at the pump commensurate with the sharply lower prices they are paying for Oil,” he wrote.

“Those prices are dropping like a rock! In other words, customers are being ‘gouged.’ I have instructed the DOJ to immediately start looking into this. Gasoline prices better start going down a lot faster than what I’m seeing!”

We just hit the mid 3.30's.  But he's right.  Not dropping fast enough.  I think they are keeping them high until after the 4th of July travel season.

It's basic retail economics and supply chain dynamics.

Cheaper gas isn't yet available because the oil purchased to produce it hasn't yet been refined, much less distributed by wholesalers.

The retail stations, most of which operate on small margins, had to raise prices quickly so that they could try to pay for their next delivery, but now are still selling the same expensive gas in their storage tanks.

That's why "price elasticity" so often only works in one direction. More oil, less regulation, lower state taxes and more competition would help drive prices down faster.

If anyone wishes to deny their truth or their soundness, the only direction in which he can proceed historically is not forward, but backward toward the time when there was no equality, no rights of the individual, no rule of the people."    -Calvin Coolidge

That may be true but that don't make it right!... tipping hat!!

Filled up for $2.93 two days ago.

That is a dollar less than 5 weeks ago.

I doubt if pump prices will drop much beyond that as tank storage will need to be refilled across the world so demand will remain robust.

“Price gouging”

How leftist

Remember the good old days when Harris suggested such a stupid idea and people around here called her a communist?

Trump is doing what every politician who is facing political backlash does and that’s blaming  others  for their failures

The cost to fill my gas tank has dropped from $60 to $58.50 ... $3.98/gal cash price.

Lyndon Johnson  tried this when prices rose on his watch of blaming businesses and industries, and the voters didn’t buy it then and they’re not gonna buy it now

The only thing that saved Johnson from losing the House of Representatives in 1966  was that the Democrats margin was so large that they could absorb the 40+ seat loss and still remain in control

Trump doesn’t have that luxury

What next Mr. President? Price controls?

Conservatism is going to be tied to the Trump presidency by the general public for a long time

What concerns me is that he is attempting to control prices for political reasons rather than market-related reasons.

And it would clearly seem to be an admission that price manipulation is happening should gasoline prices suddenly drop.

The stay-in-you-lane comment is dead-on.

I do hope Scott Bessent straightens him out on that one.

Oil and refined products are sold in commodity futures markets in 10,000 barrel contracts, on BID.

If the buyers are bidding "too much", and the refined fuel is being "bid up", too, the pump price is going to stay up.

A gas station isn't some charity, it's a business that has to make enough money to pay the help and keep the lights on.

Good points.  What average Joe Q. Public doesn't also realize that on Day 1 of the war Oil went up to $126/bbl.  Which if things were purely extrapolated, the price of gallon of gas would have reached $6/gallon that Monday.  The public should be thankful that market forces incur an under the curve commodity mentality, instead of a knee jerk.  Of course no one was complaining under that scenario.
