Why Small Modular Reactors Are Becoming a National Security Priority
By James Durso - Jun 20, 2026, 12:00 PM CDT

Energy security is becoming a national defense priority as rising power demand from AI, semiconductors, manufacturing, and military operations collides with grid vulnerabilities and growing competition with China.

Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are being positioned as a key solution, offering reliable 24/7 baseload power for defense installations, industrial facilities, and AI infrastructure.

The U.S. needs faster nuclear deployment to stay competitive, with proponents arguing that NRC-approved SMR technology can help strengthen energy independence, secure critical infrastructure, and counter China's rapidly expanding nuclear and industrial footprint.

The NRC approving the technology is one thing.  The NRC allowing it to be built is something entirely different.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

They are building them here.  Heck they even built the very first molten salt reactors here at a local university in a residential area no less.

There is only one SMR design (NuScale Power) that has received full NRC certification.  None have been built in the US so far.

They are building them to power the new Google AI facility here.  We have an oil lease across the road from it....just saying....

Where is 'here'?  And is it a Kairos design?

Valar Atomics' reactor in Utah reached criticality, marking a nuclear technology resurgence.
The reactor, named Ward250, was airlifted by the military in February.
Valar is the second of 10 companies picked by the Department of Energy to have its small modular reactor safely run all of its nuclear systems.
