When it comes to paid leave, how many hours are acceptable for an employee to have?

In the Pennsylvania General Assembly, they’re taking a look at this very issue.

Attorney Clint Barkdoll explained, “This already passed the House, and the news yesterday, I think is that there are now Senate Republicans on the record saying that they are open to passing this, the debate now is who pays for it. The House version would fall entirely onto the employer to absorb these costs. Senate Republicans are looking at some kind of a grant program that would offset some of those costs.”

The proposal includes 12 to 20 weeks of mandated paid leave, and it’s not limited to someone that’s having a child – it can be for medical care or even domestic abuse victims.

Barkdoll added, “The other one is minimum wage is popping back up again. Every year during this season I always talk about watching for things to get inserted into this budget that have nothing to do with the budget, minimum wage is one of those. Well, the news yesterday is that the House has already passed a $15 an hour minimum wage mandate that would take effect by 2029. That bill is now in this Senate Labor and Industry Committee. It looks like Senate Democrats are going to file a discharge petition to force a floor vote on this issue, take it out of the hands of the committee, and the way things are going, I wouldn’t be shocked, the votes very well could be in the Senate to pass this.”

Pat Ryan of News Talk 103.7F said, “Mark my words. On this day, the 11th of June, 2026 I don’t have kiddos, but there are people out there that treat their dogs as their children. I would like a new dog, but I’m going to need to care for that dog, train that dog. I’ve got to make sure that the dog goes out for its breaks, and if you want a well-mannered dog, you’re going to be with that dog in the very beginning stages, right? So you mark my words, right now there’s some dopey lawmaker that is going to look and extend that paid family leave for pet owners. I’m telling you. Why don’t you attach pets to it? It’s inevitable, and I can’t wait for it, because I want a dog.”
