A college classmate who currently works in D.C. posted this on Facebook (don't know whether the photo will show; I won't post the one of her):

On Sunday, I decided to drive around downtown and see if I could get a glimpse of the Octagon on the White House lawn and check out the renovation of the reflecting pool between the Lincoln Memorial and the WWII Memorial. I wanted to see with my own eyes what they both looked like. 😜

I was unable to get a glimpse of the Octagon except for the very top of the arches. It is mostly obscured by opaque fencing, full foliage trees and viewing structures. 🙃 However, I got a good look at the reflecting pool as it was filling up with water. It was nearly two-thirds full on Sunday. (FYI — it takes 6.75 million gallons of water to fill it up! Prior to this renovation the pool was leaking 500,000 gallons a week!😳)

I took pictures of the progress being made from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and then walked down to the WWII Memorial. On my way to the WWII Memorial I stopped to speak to one of the project supervisors. I had heard the company doing the repairs was from Oklahoma and since I had lived in OK for ten years and worked for a U.S. Senator from Oklahoma for 15 years, I was interested to meet two of the men working on the project; Steven Moore and Marcus Logan, Jr., COO of Mid-America Industrial Coatings from Atoka, OK.

 I was telling them how much I appreciated their hard work and great job when Marcus asked if I wanted to take a picture standing in the pool! Absolutely, you bet I do! So here’s the picture!😁 My first and probably last time ever standing in the famous reflecting pool!😅

You can see the water filling up on the left of the picture and the reflection of the monument and clouds. On the right you can see the lining of the pool where the water has not filled in yet. It is covered in a thick sturdy material to prevent leaks and is painted flag blue that actually looks nearly black in person. I was told the material is comparable to the material you line a work truck bed with to protect it from damage — a thick vinyl coating.

I really enjoyed meeting Steven and Marcus and learning a little bit more about the company and the project. And I look forward to my next chance to see the project completed!

It should be noted that the contract was a no bid deal. Plus, the contractor that got the job was a long time friend and buddy of 47.

The actual lining looks to be a few millimeters thick, while truck bed liners are far thicker and more rigid - most are 3/4". Maybe be 47 has never used or driven a truck with a bed liner?

Actually, contrary to 47's assertion, the Pool uses a sealant, not a liner. Its the sealant that is coming loose - likely poor bonding with the concrete for whatever reason.
