Trump's Kinda Ticked Off as War Rages in Lebanon; Strait Closed for Now

As I wrote last night, Iran canceled the talks in Switzerland, claiming that Israel violated the Memorandum of Understanding by striking Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Not to toot my own horn, but I have been warning about this since the details of the MOU came out, and even wrote a VIP piece about how Iran would use the Lebanon provisions in the MOU—the very first paragraphs dealt with Lebanon, before even lifting the blockade—to jerk the United States around and drive a wedge between us and Israel.

Israel has, indeed, been "violating" the ceasefire it never was allowed to negotiate, but only because, you guessed it, Iran had given Hezbollah the green light to attack and kill Israelis. They did so, killing four soldiers in a tank.

Iran's assumption seems to be that the United States is over a barrel, and that it can play the role of Darth Vader and keep changing the "deal" whenever it likes. By canceling talks in Switzerland, it is slapping the United States in the face, trying to humiliate us. No doubt the Israel-haters and -skeptics will do exactly what Iran wants and blame them for not sitting back and taking it, but at least for the moment, Trump's reaction appears to be the opposite of what they hoped, or at least sort of.

He's pissed.

Trump let the cat out of the bag when he told everybody he had no choice but to negotiate the MOU, lest the world economy collapse. He said that to strike back at critics here at home, who were unhappy he gave so many concessions to Iran, and it gave Iran a signal that their negotiating power was vast.

As of this morning, the only ships transiting the Strait are Iranian-related. That's not good at all, obviously.

As of 9:30 Eastern, oil markets remain relatively calm, with no major spike, so that is good. It's a vote by the market that this is just a bump in the road.

So ....  who made the 'deal' for Israel????  This should have nothing to do with them.  This 'deal' is between the U.S.  and Iran!

The US has been helping Israel, with their consent, for years with Lebanon @libertybele ---  Most recently ----

° 2022 Maritime Border Deal: The US mediated a landmark, indirect agreement that successfully resolved a long-running maritime boundary dispute in the Mediterranean Sea, opening the door for offshore gas exploration.

° 2024 Ceasefire: The US, alongside international partners, brokered a cessation of hostilities to stop the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah.

° 2026 Negotiations: The US brokered a truce in April, which was extended and followed by direct, US-hosted talks in Washington to negotiate further terms for security zones and permanent peace.

If anything this 'deal' should be failing because of Lebanon's resistance to a ceasefire.

It's helpful to see both sides...Remember, Israel is expanding its occupation and fighting for still more territory in Lebanon.  I don't see how continuing this is helpful to a ceasefire.

From my perspective it was falling apart from the beginning; of course Trump will either blame Vance of dump it all off on Israel who is defending themselves.

What a horrible position for Trump to be in, but, IMHO he brought this upon himself (and our country)....going into Iran in the first place without knowing what he was truly facing.  He should have relied on the advice of Hegseth, Cain and other generals.  (Likely the push came from his snake of a SIL).

Iran has him in the palm of their pockets .... a deal was made BUT Iran is going to do what they want regardless of the supposed 'deal'.  Trump will have to continue what he started + ground troops in order to win. That's not an option for Trump -- mid terms, price of oil and the DEMS  already labeling this deal as a losing deal along with many of the GOP.

The mullahs ordered Hezbollah to provoke Israel, knowing there would be an Israeli response. That gave them the opportunity to poke Vance in the eye, and embarrass him before the talks even get started.

Now they will evaluate Vance's response. If he does nothing, they will see it as weakness going into the negotiations. If he escalates, they will see it as evidence that we are not sincere in the negotiations.

It is a no-win situation, and the reason why Middle East conflicts are to be avoided at all costs. They have been playing this game profitably for thousands of years, and understand how to navigate these waters.

We in the west are used to living with a solid foundation below us; whereas, in the Middle East, they thrive when the ground is constantly in motion. We make the mistake of thinking they would prefer a foundation when everything they have can be attributed to their ability to shift every time the ground moves a little. They aren't going to change.

President Trump’s deal to lift sanctions on Iran and give it access to a $300 billion reconstruction fund has cast a glum mood over the Senate Republican Conference, with GOP senators saying that many of their colleagues are in “dismay” and “somber” over the cost of the agreement.

Trump’s most vocal MAGA allies on Capitol Hill are defending the agreement as a potential breakthrough that could finally end Iran’s nuclear enrichment program.

But many more GOP senators are skeptical about reaching any real agreement with Iran, arguing that the United States doesn’t seem to have any real leverage in the talks.

While a handful of Republican senators have slammed Trump’s memorandum of understanding with Iran in public statements, Senate sources say many more within the Senate GOP conference feel uncomfortable over the details of the agreement and pessimistic it will produce a satisfactory result. 

“I think there is a high level of dismay in that room,” said a Republican senator, who requested anonymity to discuss what GOP colleagues were thinking about Trump’s Iran deal as they gathered for a lunch meeting in the Capitol on Thursday.

The senator predicted that Congress won’t ever get a chance to vote on the matter because talks with Iran are unlikely to produce a signed agreement to end its nuclear program, a view that’s shared by other Republican senators.

“I think it’s unlikely that an agreement will be reached and signed,” the source said.
