US-Iran talks in Switzerland abruptly called off, as Israel and Hezbollah trade attacks in Lebanon

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/jun/19/us-iran-talks-in-switzerland-cancelled

Quote
JD Vance’s staff were at the airbase ready to fly to summit in Bürgenstock for Iran talks before trip was suddenly cancelled

Talks set to take place on Friday between the US and Iran in Switzerland to implement a peace deal were cancelled as Hezbollah targeted Israeli forces and Israel carried out a wave of airstrikes in south Lebanon which killed at least 16 people.

The talks were set to begin in the Swiss village of Obbürgen two days after the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that opened a 60-day window to negotiate a permanent understanding over Iran’s nuclear programme, while getting oil traffic moving through the strait of Hormuz.

The White House said the US looked forward to “beginning technical talks as soon as possible”, as it announced that JD Vance, who is leading negotiations for the Trump administration, would now not be travelling.

“The logistics of these negotiations have never been simple or predictable. As of now the vice-president is not departing tonight,” a White House spokesperson said late on Thursday.

The cancellation of the talks came as Israel and Hezbollah traded their most violent strikes since the ceasefire was established.

(snip)

The cancellation of the talks between Iran and the US on Friday came so abruptly, that Vance’s staff and a small pack of journalists had even gathered at Joint Base Andrews outside Washington in anticipation of the trip. Dozens of White House officials, advance staffers and media were already in Switzerland to prepare for Vance’s anticipated arrival.

As typically happens....the party in power usually loses.

What Republicans are facing this fall goes beyond just simply the party in power losing seats

Even before the war, it was the cost of living and the economy that was costing the GOP elections even in red districts that Trump carried

Now you can throw this disastrous war with a disastrous conclusion on top of that

Republicans are facing a very much earned rejection by the voters this November

JD's off to a great start I see...

The mullahs ordered Hezbollah to provoke Israel, knowing there would be an Israeli response. That gave them the opportunity to poke Vance in the eye, and embarrass him before the talks even get started.

Now they will evaluate Vance's response. If he does nothing, they will see it as weakness going into the negotiations. If he escalates, they will see it as evidence that we are not sincere in the negotiations.

It is a no-win situation, and the reason why Middle East conflicts are to be avoided at all costs. They have been playing this game profitably for thousands of years, and understand how to navigate these waters.

We in the west are used to living with a solid foundation below us; whereas, in the Middle East, they thrive when the ground is constantly in motion. We make the mistake of thinking they would prefer a foundation when everything they have can be attributed to their ability to shift every time the ground moves a little. They aren't going to change.

Netanyahu's Mouthpieces Turn on Trump, Revealing a Deeper Israeli Ingratitude

After Netanyahu's most vocal cheerleader called him a 'scumbag' over the Iran deal, JD Vance correctly observed that Israel's right wing would 'want this to go on until every Iranian is dead.' It's time for the U.S. to reckon with Israel's recklessness.

Tardy Iran No-Show Abruptly Nixes Peace Deal Signing in Switzerland

The U.S. drive to launch high-stakes peace talks with Iran hit a snag Friday after Tehran reportedly delayed sending its delegation to Switzerland for the negotiations citing Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Lebanon for its absence.

The White House confirmed on Thursday that Vice President JD Vance has delayed his trip to Switzerland for talks on the ongoing Iran peace deal.

The vice president had been scheduled to travel to Europe on Thursday to participate in a new round of negotiations for the Iran peace agreement that President Donald Trump signed this week. The White House confirmed the trip’s delay, highlighting statements made by the vice president during a press conference.

“As the Vice President said at his press conference, the plans for the upcoming technical talks have not been finalized, and the U.S. delegation has been prepared to depart at the first available opportunity,” the White House told the Hill.

“But the logistics of these negotiations have never been simple or predictable,” the statement continued. “As of now the Vice President is not departing tonight. We will let you know as soon as we have a concrete update about next steps. We look forward to beginning technical talks as soon as possible.”

So ....  who made the 'deal' for Israel????  This should have nothing to do with them.  This 'deal' is between the U.S.  and Iran!

If anything this 'deal' should be failing because of Lebanon's resistance to a ceasefire.

Am I missing something here??

What are the democrats doing that deserves a vote?

Blaming the Republicans for the economic turbulence that they caused.

Inflation during the Biden administration (2021–2025) reached a 40-year high, peaking at 9.1% in June 2022 before cooling to an annual average of roughly 2.9% by the end of his term. The cumulative price surge over these years totaled approximately 20%, wiping out wage gains and driving up the costs of basic necessities.

US-Iran talks in Switzerland abruptly called off, as Israel and Hezbollah trade attacks in Lebanon

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/jun/19/us-iran-talks-in-switzerland-cancelle

Netanyahu sure knows how to extinguish the frightening prospect of peace.  And this effort has it ALL ---- dead IDF soldiers, another existential threat requiring -- no, demanding! -- rampant killing and a new occupation establishing a larger security zone --- opening another debate on what to do with the indigenous people on what will amount to Israeli land.

A little more from the article ----

Quote
The cancellation of the talks came as Israel and Hezbollah traded their most violent strikes since the ceasefire was established. Hezbollah targeted Israeli forces near the city of Nabatieh, in south Lebanon, with several salvoes of rocket fire and drones overnight after intermittent Israeli shelling throughout Thursday.

Israel responded with a wave of airstrikes on the city and surrounding towns on what it said were Hezbollah targets, leaving at least 18 people dead and 33 wounded, according to Lebanon’s ministry of health.

Hezbollah said it was targeting Israeli forces that were trying to advance towards the foothills surrounding Nabatieh – a flashpoint where there has been intermittent fighting since the US-Iran ceasefire was announced. Prior to the truce, Israeli forces were advancing towards the southern Lebanese city.

The killing of Israeli soldiers prompted fury within Israel, with the national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, calling for scorched earth in Lebanon.

"With all due respect to the Americans, Israel must make it clear to the entire world that the blood of our sons and the security of our citizens are not up for bargaining. All of Lebanon must burn,” Ben-Gvir said in a statement.

The French foreign minister, Jean-Noël Barrot, called on Israel on Friday to stop its strikes in Lebanon and said the US must put pressure on it to respect the ceasefire deal.

“This agreement provides for a cessation of hostilities, the Israeli government must respect it, and the United States in particular must exert all the necessary pressure on the Israeli government to ensure that this is the case,” Barrot said on France Info radio.

If the Republican fail at governing, and the far left ends up with control of both houses and the presidency in 2028; then, yes, the country would have been better off letting Kamala fail at governing.

Iran to invite UN watchdog to inspect nuclear sites, Witkoff tells Congress: report

Iran is set to invite the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to inspect its nuclear sites and help identify and uncover Tehran’s enriched material, White House Special Envoy Steve Witkoff told lawmakers Thursday, according to reports.

Citing a source, The Associated Press reported that Witkoff told congressional leaders and members of national security-related committees that a side letter to the memorandum of understanding had been drafted between Tehran and the IAEA extending the invitation.

Witkoff disclosed the existence of the letter and invitation during the briefing, the outlet reported.

Witkoff said the letter to IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi would allow him to bring U.S. nuclear inspectors to Tehran.

The IAEA will go where and when the Iranians tell them, as they did under the previous 0bama "agreement".

Iran declares the Strait of Hormuz closed again after US lifts blockade

Iran re-closed the Strait of Hormuz Friday, citing Israel’s refusal to leave Lebanon and US forces’ ongoing presence in the region.

 By Caitlin Doornbos
Published June 19, 2026, 8:46 a.m. ET
Iran re-closed the Strait of Hormuz Friday instead of coming to Switzerland to engage in nuclear negotiations, citing Israel’s refusal to leave Lebanon and US forces’ ongoing presence in the region.

In a statement read over maritime radio channels, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said the US was in violation of the memorandum of understanding between the two countries, which President Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed Wednesday.

“Since Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon, the complete lifting of the naval blockade, and the withdrawal of American terrorist forces from the Persian Gulf and the region are among the main conditions of the agreement between Iran and the United States, the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until these conditions are met,” it said. “All ships are requested, for the sake of their security and safety, not to approach the Strait of Hormuz. Any vessel that defies this directive will be targeted.”

Please define what "winning the game" means?  And what is victorious?  How many service men and women would you sacrifice to "win the game"?

Ask yourself: how many men did Eisenhower "sacrifice" in Operation Tiger and on D-Day? Should he have followed your advice? If you dislike the thought that you could have grown up under a Nazi regime, why do you think it will be a swell idea for your children to grown up under an Islamic one?

IF Trump is indeed throwing Israel under the bus, I cannot support that or him for that matter.

Like allowing the Iranians to sell their oil in order to get them to agree, so he must do as the Iranians ask in Lebanon or NO DEEEEEAaaaLLLLLLL. That would mean the world has ended.

Such a weak man. He self-aggrandizes the easy problems but then collapses when faced with the tough problems ... because politics ... because etc.

But voters are gong to fix this problem by electing politicians who will raise the price of gas dollars higher, make retroactive taxation normal, pack SCOTUS, ensure permanent Democrat rule, govern most of the US under Socialist or Communist edicts, etc.

That will show 47 and his pack of GOPers!!!

The most interesting point of Trump's Crusade, is that he was insanely crazy for a 'deal'. OK ... i guess?
He got his stupid deal which nobody believes in except him. So now, with his obsessive 'deal' in the past ...
Now he is more dangerous than ever. In his OCD mind he can now check the "got a deal" checkmark.

With that checkmark filled ... good God. He can do anything now. I would not want to be Iran right now.
Trump is pissed off and he has a Green Flag in his own mind.

He needs the Noble Prize first - then all bets are off. Israel better watch out!!

FACT CHECKING JD VANCE:

JD Vance accused Israeli cabinet members of personally attacking President Trump and warned them to be careful, telling them that Israel relies heavily on American military support.

I went looking for the alleged ‘personal attacks’ on President Trump:

National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir said Israel “is not a banana republic” and that the agreement “does not bind us in any way.”

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich called the deal “bad for Israel and for the entire free world” and warned Israel may have to continue confronting Iran alone.

Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that Israeli forces would remain in southern Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza.

I could not find any cabinet minister personally attacking President Trump.

JD appears to have just made that up.

@AZ_Intel_

As of now the Vice President is not departing tonight.

Hopefully, he departs the political stage with 47 in a few years.

Iran declares the Strait of Hormuz closed again after US lifts blockade

Iran re-closed the Strait of Hormuz Friday, citing Israel’s refusal to leave Lebanon and US forces’ ongoing presence in the region.

No. No!  Again, the United States/Trump/Vance/Kushner/Witcoff have NO right to make any agreement for Israel.  Period!!!

Israel is an important ally in the ME and the United States should be defending Israel, not pushing her under the bus.

I think his popularity will plummet.  Leaving Rubio and DeSantis, though I'm not sure DeSantis is eyeing the presidency.   Heck of a situation for the GOP to be in, because technically Rubio can't run - neither of his parents were born in the U.S.  He is an anchor baby.  It is going to be interesting to see how SCOTUS rules about birthright citizenship and what happens as a result of their ruling; if they rule against those born here whose parents are or were here illegally it will impact people like Rubio.

Hands down, without a doubt, Ron DeSantis.  He has bucked the establishment and has succeeded.  :patriot:

One has to sit back and marvel at the obvious appetite for a Final Solution to the Islamic problem.

Its either our final solution for the "the Islamic problem" or theirs for us. Pick one.

Works for me.  But a lot of rhetoric being heard here is making our brand toxic.  We got to steer this ship while remembering what happens now impacts '28, '30, '32, and beyond.  Outside Iran, most all the other news is good. That has to be highlighted.

I like to think we get a lot of moderate lurkers.  And if they read this thread?

What Republicans are facing this fall goes beyond just simply the party in power losing seats

Even before the war, it was the cost of living and the economy that was costing the GOP elections even in red districts that Trump carried

Now you can throw this disastrous war with a disastrous conclusion on top of that

Republicans are facing a very much earned rejection by the voters this November

Because benign Democrat policies are so much better ... like they were in the good old days of 0bama and Biden ...

So ....  who made the 'deal' for Israel????  This should have nothing to do with them.  This 'deal' is between the U.S.  and Iran!

If anything this 'deal' should be failing because of Lebanon's resistance to a ceasefire.

Am I missing something here??

Yes, resounding Yes, you missed the statement by 47 admitting we had to do as Iran asks or risk not making a deal.

After the his surrender, he must follow every whim and demand they ask for soon they will be getting almost a trillion dollars free. They have become one of the most powerful nations on Earth, if not the THE most powerful, having defeated the "greatest military in the world" and its most revered leader, 47.

Proving war pays for the loser - a brand spanking new paradigm for the modern age.

But there are some here who believe we have witnessed the 47 yr old war's end already and are brain dead enough to accept that we lost..

47's War™is over; the war with Iran will proceed apace, as if nothing happened [everything destroyed can be rebuilt ] and may well accelerate [ Iran's new ICBM build out ].

47 lost because Iran is dictating the terms - a role always reserved for the winner - and 47 is dutifully trying to enforce their demands, especially when it comes to Israel. Losers do not get access to US$600,000,00.

But as we used to say in the olden days, never try to sway the mind of a true believer.
