I heard a local story once about a mudlogger who had been on a well a really long time and wanted some time away from the rig. So at a connection he dropped several jawbreakers down the drill string. When they went to drill the bit was plugged so they had to trip out. Of course when they tripped the bit out of the hole the jaw breakers had dissolved. I don't recall if they ever found out what he did or not.
No matter how desperate, I don't know of any who tried to get time off by sabotaging the drill string. No marbles or jawbreakers in the carbide lag...because it would not take the hands long to figure out who stuck them with a trip.
Dirty tricks work both ways.
I recall an F-3 (Smith) running for 180 hours in salt based mud back in 1980. and quite a few 180 hour runs (in invert) back in 1989-1990. By then, we were ringing out core heads in the Winnipeg Sand up here. I don't think anyone has been that deep in 20 years.
Now, bit runs only go until you run out of lease or kill the mud motor, but at 5000 ft. or more a day, that doesn't take long.
Treat wise..... I always loved pixy sticks.
Those were a favorite, too, but mom hated how we managed to make a mess with them, and they didn't last long. I do remember us mixing up enough Funny Face drink stuff in a quart canteen of water (pretty strong) and Fizzies.
