82 years after D-Day, the Greatest Generation is still the Greatest Generation

The deeper meaning of D-Day risks slipping away from too many Americans, especially the young.

Joseph Ford Cotto | June 8, 2026

The 82nd anniversary of D-Day has come and gone, marked by a fitting and powerful commemoration from President Donald J. Trump. It reminded the nation of what true American resolve looks like.

On June 6, 1944, Allied forces launched Operation Overlord, the greatest amphibious assault ever attempted, shattering Nazi control over Europe in a display of coordinated land, sea, and air power that changed the course of history. American troops hit the deadly shores of Omaha and Utah beaches through crashing waves and withering enemy fire, pushing forward no matter the cost.

At Pointe du Hoc, Army Rangers climbed towering cliffs under direct fire to destroy German guns that threatened the entire landing. Backed by airborne divisions and relentless air support, the Allies secured five beachheads along fifty miles of coastline, putting more than 150,000 men ashore by nightfall.

Within weeks nearly a million troops poured through Normandy, building the momentum that led to Nazi Germany's unconditional surrender in May 1945.

Those hours on the beaches came at an indescribable price. More than 10,000 Allied men were killed, wounded, or missing on that single day, including over 2,500 Americans who gave everything to defeat fascism and protect the republic from a metastasizing cancer. They crossed an ocean to meet tyranny head-on, proving the unmatched strength of American warriors when freedom itself hangs in the balance.

Their giving of all they had forms the standard by which every later generation must measure itself. It is a legacy of courage reflected in the deadliest war humanity has known and passed down through 250 years of this nation’s life.

I'm not sure many younger people understand the importance of D Day.

I hope and pray we are never faced with such an event again.  I'm not sure how many would willing participate.
