Wes Moore Faces More Questions About His Military Service

•   June 2, 2026

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore is facing fresh allegations of having exaggerated his military experience, after a yearlong Spotlight on Maryland investigation yielded “no documentary evidence” to support his claim of having “led soldiers into combat in Afghanistan.”

Spotlight on Maryland is a joint venture between the Baltimore Sun and the TV news stations FOX 45 and WJLA.

In a May 2022 post on X, Moore wrote, “When I was an Army captain and led soldiers into combat in Afghanistan, we lived by a simple principle: Leave no one behind.”

It wasn’t the first time Moore had made such a claim.

According to the report published by the Sun, “Moore’s public narrative about experiencing direct-fire combat predates the 2022 post.” Moore used language in both his 2015 book “The Work: My Search for a Life That Matters” and in an interview for the USO magazine “On Patrol” a year earlier, suggesting he was an experienced combat leader and including vivid descriptions of a firefight.

During a 2021 appearance on “The David Rubestein Show,” Moore was asked directly if he had requested an office job to avoid getting shot at in Afghanistan. “No, not at all,” Moore responded. “I was very clear. I went over and led a group of paratroopers as a special operations officer over there working in information operations. And we were very much in the field.”

Moore further added, “I literally, within the first days of Afghanistan, I started seeing first-hand, literally when you see your first firefight, you start seeing just what kind of fighting is going on in Afghanistan.”

According to the Sun, “Military records reviewed by Spotlight show no evidence that Moore, a lieutenant assigned as a brigade headquarters staff officer, experienced firefights in Afghanistan as his public narrative conveys.”

The report added, “He was not awarded a decoration for the firefight he describes, nor was he awarded the Army’s Combat Action Badge [for any such battle].”

Another Al Gore.
[H]umanity repeats the worst mistakes of previous generations and ... every free, prosperous civilization will eventually be destroyed by that small fraction of its people who find no satisfaction in anything but anger.
