Tense California governor’s race comes to a head: Key primaries to watch Tuesday
by Julia Mueller - 06/02/26 6:00 AM ET

Voters in half a dozen states will vote in primaries on Tuesday, with the spotlight on the race to replace California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D).

Democrats crowded into the wide-open race, raising concerns that the splintered field could open the door for Republicans. But after controversy squeezed Democrat Eric Swalwell out of the running, support started to consolidate around former state Attorney General Xavier Becerra and billionaire Tom Steyer as the party’s top prospects.

Across the aisle, President Trump endorsed Republican Steve Hilton, but top two vote-getters will advance to November’s general election regardless of their party affiliation.

Tuesday’s primaries will also decide who leads Los Angeles, the second-largest city in the country — and cement key congressional races in Iowa, where Democrats see rare openings amid the fight for control in Washington.

New Jersey, South Dakota, Montana and New Mexico are also holding June 2 primaries. Here are six races to watch:

A little late

Trump makes late-night endorsements in six states ahead of Tuesday primaries, including California
The president called Gavin Newsom 'Gavin Newscum' and said crime is increasing and taxes are the highest in the country

President Trump has issued a series of endorsements ahead of Tuesday’s primary elections in California, Iowa, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota, including in gubernatorial, congressional and Senate races.

Among the candidates Trump has thrown his support behind is U.S. Rep. Randy Feenstra, R-Iowa, who is seeking to become his state's next governor.

"As your next Governor, Randy will fight tirelessly to Grow the Economy, Cut Taxes and Regulations, Promote MADE IN THE U.S.A., Unleash American Energy DOMINANCE, Champion our Amazing Farmers and Ranchers, Empower Ethanol, Keep our Border SECURE, Stop Migrant Crime, Ensure LAW AND ORDER, Strengthen our incredible Military, Veterans, and Law Enforcement, Advance Election Integrity, and Defend our always under siege Second Amendment," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

In California — a state Trump and Republicans have routinely criticized over its majority Democratic leadership and are hoping to make gains in despite Democrats’ statewide dominance — Trump has endorsed Steve Hilton in the gubernatorial race. California uses a top-two primary system, in which all candidates appear on the same ballot and the two highest vote-getters advance to the general election regardless of party.

Spencer Pratt accuses LA Mayor Karen Bass of breaking election law by campaigning near ballot box

Spencer Pratt filed a formal complaint accusing his opponent, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, of violating election laws by allegedly campaigning too close to a ballot box.

"Karen Bass just violated election law here," the reality star, who is running for mayor as an Independent, wrote on X on Tuesday.

"She is so accustomed to breaking the law with no accountability, she even filmed herself doing it. Well, those days are over. We just filed a formal complaint for illegally gaming the election. We must protect our democracy."

Pratt added that "Electioneering within 100 feet of a ballot box is AGAINST THE LAW. Soliciting votes at a ballot box is AGAINST THE LAW. These clear violations show a reckless disregard for the rule of law and our democratic process."

He went on to say that a person in a position of power such as Bass "should be especially respectful of our democratic laws, but this is just emblematic of Karen's mafia-like regime. It's ‘rules for thee, but not for me.’"

The 42-year-old included a photo of the complaint in his post, adding, "We will uphold the rule of law and our democratic norms. Enjoy your conference calls with your lawyers, Karen!"

Hilton, Becerra poised to advance to November in California governor’s race
Sacramento Bee, Jun 3, 2026

As of early Wednesday morning, state officials had not called the race to succeed outgoing Gov. Gavin Newsom. Republican Steve Hilton and Democrat Xavier Becerra looked poised to advance to the November general election, according to unofficial ballot returns.

California’s notoriously slow vote count, which Secretary of State Shirley Weber says prizes accuracy over speed, means that results likely won’t be finalized for days, or even weeks. Last month, Newsom urged local election clerks to speed the count to curb voting misinformation.

In California, the top two vote-getters advance to the general election regardless of party affiliation. Some early polls predicted a possible dual Republican matchup, panicking Democrats worried about losing the governor’s mansion for the first time in two decades and reigniting an effort to reform the primary system.

But as of early Wednesday morning, Hilton had garnered 27.6% of the counted vote and Becerra had 25.5%. Democrat Tom Steyer trailed with about 19.6%. The Associated Press estimated about 55% of votes had been counted and had not called the race for any candidates.

State leaders urged low-polling candidates to drop out, a charge some denounced as anti-democratic and biased against candidates of color. The fluid dynamics of the race also led Democratic voters to hold onto their ballots for longer than usual and post a flurry of late returns, while Republicans voted earlier, allowing Hilton an early lead.

Democrat Who Worked with Al-Qaeda-Linked Group Wins New Jersey Primary to Replace Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman

Paul Bois 2 Jun 2026

Adam Hamawy, a controversial candidate who previously volunteered with an al-Qaeda-linked group, has won the Democratic primary for retiring Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman’s (D-NJ) seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Hamawy, who was endorsed by the so-called “Squad,” became a lightning rod for criticism on the campaign trail due to his intense criticism of Israel and his having volunteered with the Benevolence International Foundation in Bosnia, per the New York Post:

An Iraq War veteran, Hamawy has made national headlines for saving Sen. Tammy Duckworth’s (D-Ill) life after a helicopter crash as well as for his volunteer work in the Gaza Strip.

However, Hamawy’s 1994 internship with the Benevolence International Foundation in Bosnia, and his association with the infamous “Blind Sheikh” have also drawn scrutiny.

The 9/11 Commission Report described the now-defunct Benevolence International Foundation’s operation in Bosnia as part of an “impressive array of offices [that] covertly provided financial and other support for terrorist activities” by Osama bin Laden in the 1990s.

Establishment Democrats notch key wins; GOP looking good in California
by Jared Gans and Sarah Fortinsky - 06/03/26 7:20 AM ET

Republican candidates in key California races looked poised to advance to the general election this morning, but with almost half of the votes yet to be counted, there’s still some possibility of a “red mirage.”

There’s no such uncertainty for establishment Democrats in other key races across the country, who comfortably made it through their primaries against more progressive challengers.

Following a volatile race with no clear front-runner until close to primary day, former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra appears to be in a strong position to advance to the general election in California’s primary system, in which the top two candidates regardless of party move on to November.

Becerra is currently in second place in the vote count, just behind Republican Steve Hilton, a former Fox News host who has President Trump’s endorsement. Both candidates are currently several points ahead of billionaire businessman Tom Steyer, who has sought to set himself as the progressive standard-bearer.

Most of California’s ballots are cast by mail, and many Democrats didn’t return their ballots this year until close to the election. That gives Steyer a possible path if the remaining ballots are left-leaning enough.

In the Los Angeles mayoral race, incumbent Karen Bass (D) is comfortably in first place with nearly two-thirds of the vote counted so far.

Republican Spencer Pratt, a former reality television personality, is in second place, about 8 points ahead of City Council member Nithya Raman, who is seeking a progressive challenge to Bass. The same dynamics benefitting Steyer could help Raman, but she has a decent amount of ground to make up.

Pratt would likely be viewed as facing a more uphill battle toward winning the mayoral race than Raman if he advances, despite Bass’s popularity plummeting during her first term.

State Sen. Scott Wiener (D), a more moderate candidate by California’s standards, who had the backing of the California Democratic Party, also finished first in the closely watched race to succeed retiring Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), the former House speaker.

The more progressive San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan, who has Pelosi’s endorsement, is currently in second, potentially setting up a faceoff in November. That would leave out Saikat Chakrabarti, a former chief of staff to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), who has the support of key members of the so-called “Squad,” such as Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) and Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.).

Moderate Democrats also notched a major win in the Iowa Senate primary, as state Rep. Josh Turek (D) cruised to victory over state Sen. Zach Wahls (D).

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) indirectly played a notable role in the race, as the super PAC VoteVets backed Turek. The group backs veterans and their relatives for office and is considered to be in line with Schumer.

Wahls, a critic of the Democratic leader, had accused Schumer of attempting to influence the primary, though both VoteVets and Schumer denied they are tied.

The Iowa Senate race could be critical for Democrats in November if they are to have a chance of winning back control of the upper chamber.

And a moderate Democrat with backing from several local Democratic parties won the contested Democratic primary to face Rep. Thomas Kean Jr. (R-N.J.).

Rebecca Bennett emphasized her record as a former Navy helicopter pilot, a similar background to that of Gov. Mikie Sherrill (D), in the race. She easily finished first to set up the November matchup, despite accusations from Bennett’s campaign that Republicans sought to meddle in the race to boost her more progressive opponents.

Democrats are eagerly eyeing Kean’s seat, as he has been absent from Congress for nearly three months with an undisclosed medical issue.

Kean said in a statement Tuesday, ahead of becoming the GOP nominee for reelection, that he plans to return to Congress in a few weeks and will reveal his condition at that point.

Iowa primary results: Trump-backed Feenstra concedes to Lahn in governor primary; Hinson and Turek will compete for open Senate seat

Rep. Randy Feenstra won a last-minute endorsement from President Donald Trump.
ByABC NEWS
June 3, 2026, 12:00 AM

Iowa Democratic state Rep. Josh Turek will face Republican state Rep. Ashley Hinson, who was endorsed by President Donald Trump, in November for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by retiring Republican Sen. Joni Ernst, ABC News projects.

Meanwhile, in the closely watched Republican primary for governor, ABC News projects Zahn Lahn, a farmer and businessman, will defeat Trump-backed Rep. Randy Feenstra.

Feenstra, a three-term congressman who won a last-minute endorsement from Trump last week, entered the race widely considered the frontrunner.

Feenstra conceded to Lahn, both campaigns confirmed to ABC News.

Iowans also voted in primaries several competitive House races.

Usually, an incumbent is in real trouble when they get pushed into a runoff but this is California where every shenanigan known to man will be in play.
