The incident began Thursday afternoon at the GKN Aerospace Transparency Systems facility on Western Avenue after a 34,000-gallon tank containing methyl methacrylate, a highly flammable industrial chemical used to make acrylic plastics, overheated and began venting vapors.
This started on Thursday and is only about three miles or so from where I am living. The company makes canopies for the F-35 and other fighters and windows for numerous commercial jets. So far...they have evacuated 50,000 and each time I make a trip to the apartment I am moving out of in Huntington Beach I have to detour further and further out. They still don't know if the tank will rupture and leak, the best case scenario but still a potential ecological disaster, or go up in a huge explosion causing damage for miles. The aerospace company is in deep shit over obvious maintenance failures.
