Army Special Operations Looks to ‘Adapt at the Edge’

U.S. Army Special Operations Command is focused on generating combat-credible soldiers to support the Army and the joint force, its commanding general said.

“Only sustainable, predictable, timely and consistent funding will allow us to transform and modernize quickly enough to face the rapidly evolving threats we will encounter on tomorrow's battlefields,” Lt. Gen. Lawrence Ferguson said May 12 before the Senate Armed Services Committee’s emerging threats and capabilities subcommittee. “Your Army's special operations forces are strategically ready, generating warfighting capabilities and asymmetric advantages for crisis response, cooperation, competition and for conflict, both today and in the future.”

To meet the needs of the modern battlefield, Army Special Operations Command soldiers need to harness modern tools and technology, including artificial intelligence, he said.

“We see AI really, as a critical tool for cueing human action and then offloading the cognitive burden on human operators and human intelligence professionals,” Ferguson said. “The biggest area in which we are using it within U.S. Army Special Operations Command is for predictive maintenance with our rotary wing aviation fleet.” The command also is exploring employing AI to process intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance information, he added.
