This is such ridiculous BS. Large ungulates are a part of every land-based eco-system. As the article barely touches upon, if you remove the domesticated large ungulates, wild large ungulates would soon replace them. Or the land would go wanting.
Here's a shaker for you: Look into reclamation efforts to recover lands abused by farming practices in the south and the west. Abandoned farms, sometimes so stripped of topsoil that only bramble will grow there...
The MAIN thing being used to replace that deep topsoil those lands were once famous for is... Wait for it... CATTLE.
YUP. You want to reclaim those lands, remove the bramble with heavy machinery, plant a cover crop with fast-growing grasses, and then begin hay-bombing that land to feed cattle. The cattle pock mark the land during rain - each hoof print (and there are millions) retains water that does not run off, improving water retention. The hay not eaten contains a seed bank that the cows stomp in, and provides fertilization that stays in place to decay... The hay that is eaten also contains a seed bank, one that passes through the cow's digestive tract, and also provides the best fertilizer known to man.
Harrow the land, keep the tops cut on the weeds, and let the cows do what they do. It's amazing. PH will automatically adjust to am optimal balance perfectly designed for grassland in but a few years... Most weeds eventually die back because the PH goes down... Because of cow shit. Properly managed, the land will go back to building topsoil in as little as five years.
It is a miracle straight from God.
Because of cows.
These people are idiots.
