Put another way, politics has become more personal in the 20's. That's why friendships are ended when people vote for the "wrong guy."
Some of that boils down to what group people want to rule them. Yeah, you read that right: rule them.
Somewhere along the line it seems everyone forgot the job of our representatives in all levels of government is not to be rulers, but servants. For the head screwed, they imagine benevolent rulers who will dish out great boons to them.
Ignorant of history, they believe that fairy tale and react with passion and vitriol against any who threaten their fantasy.
In reality, those who promise them the moon and stars would happily stand on their burdened shoulders and huddled backs to rip those from the heavens and keep them for themselves.
What the rest of us want is someone who, (as promised so often), will go to the seat of government and do our bidding, someone to represent our interests, and only take relatively minor compensation (as set forth in law) to perform that task within the constraints of the Constitution and the law. We aren't looking for them to give us the moon and stars, only help create the cultural and economic stability to seek them on our own. People to foster a system in which we can achieve great things through merit and hard work, not dole out scraps regardless of effort (or lack thereof), scraps of that taken from those (including us) who achieve.
Some would suckle at the withered teat of government, remaining in infancy, while the rest of us would prefer to go forth and earn our way, unfettered by those who demand tribute for the exercise of that right.
There is the difference, and when those of us who achieve demand those clinging to the teat let go, they react like the petulant infants they are, throw tantrums, break things, hold their breath and turn blue, and engage in other infantile performances, some incredibly violent, as if that will get them their way.
