Outrage as Americans learn of exit requirements for people fleeing California and New York for states with no income tax

Americans moving out of California say state bureaucrats are demanding they explain why they left, or risk being taxed as residents.

Some have received letters demanding various evidence of their departure, fueling fresh criticism of the state's tax policies, according to online posts.

'People who have left California are receiving letters telling them that they still need to pay California state taxes,' MAGA influencer Mila Joy wrote on X.

'My gosh, if this doesn't show how broke California is I don't know what will.'

The letter Joy posted was sent by the California Franchise Tax Board as part of the agency's routine residency audits, which help determine when taxpayers officially became non-residents.

It requests that recipients provide a 'brief narrative' explaining their move, along with documentation like moving invoices and employment records to show the exact date they left California.

The letter's demanding tone has prompted a flurry of outrage on social media, with one user writing: 'Amazingly unbelievable that these vultures have nothing better to do with their time other than chase down inconsequential money!'

Others said it was hard to believe California was aggressively pursuing additional tax revenue, noting the state collected roughly $275 billion in personal income, sales and corporate taxes in 2025, with some placing blame on Governor Gavin Newsom.

I think we need to encourage the California secession movement.  If they decide to go, we can either make it amicable:  they get a share of the Federal national debt, half divided on the basis of population half divided on the basis of GDP, give us perpetual leases on some naval bases, and let counties adjacent to other states hold binding plebiscites on whether to join the neighboring state and stay in the union or leave with California, a free trade agreement, fix the California dollar (or peso or whatever they decide to call it) to the US dollar for a period of five years before allowing it to float,... Or, we could treat them like Confederacy:  reconquer them, then apply radical reconstruction to the seceded territories.  Either way would make an improvement to the American body politic.
And when they behead your own people in the wars which are to come, then you will know what this was all about.

No letters yet... Still have property there that I hope to unload no later than next year. I've spent less than two weeks in California total over the last 8 years...

I don't want Californians moving to Arizona if they want to bring their bad voting habits with them!  We've seen too much of that!

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.
By County:

By Congressional district:

Seems to me there is enough interior California to make a new state. Call it Sierra or something, and gain two seats in the Senate...

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

I smell class action suits coming from these citizens fleeing California that will claim this is unconstitutional as states cannot impact the other states federally.

Unsure of which part of the Constitution may be cited, but this one seems for sure

Art IV Sec 2: The Citizens of each State shall be entitled to all Privileges and Immunities of Citizens in the several States.
