Trump weighs cabinet appointment for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis
By Josh Christenson
Published May 1, 2026, 1:21 p.m. ET

President Trump said Friday he would consider appointing Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to a cabinet position next year.

“Well, I like him a lot,” Trump told a reporter in explaining why he might appoint the term-limited governor to a top post.

DeSantis was once among Trump’s 2024 primary rivals for president, but he came in a distant second in the Iowa caucuses, and his campaign fizzled out.

The Sunshine State gov eventually endorsed Trump, and DeSantis now works closely on Trump’s priorities, including his crackdown on illegal immigration.

??? DeSantis has always been against illegal immigration; it wasn't just a "Trump priority".

I'm hoping DeSantis will run again for governor once time allows.

I still want him as president.

But everything points to him not even bothering anymore.

I saw something the other day about DeSantis wanting to be on the Supreme Court. I don't know whether there's any truth to that.
I wouldn't mind seeing him in the White House.

He's appointed a few justices to the FL Supreme Court.  I think he'd make a really good SCOTUS justice,  but like Cruz, I feel  his talents would be better utilized elsewhere.  After a period of time he is eligible to  run again as governor.  I'd also like to see him fill a U.S. Senate or House seat.

There is a video floating around with Ron doing a great Hack-um "Temu Obama" Jeffries imitation.

I'm hoping for Donalds to take his place.  It will be interesting to see Jeffries reaction if he gets the nomination -- two Blacks going head to head.

Gov DeSantis is my first pick for 2028 for POTUS.  I consider him the strongest candidate in the Republican Party for the position.

I haven't worked actively in a campaign to get someone elected in some time, but I would jump at the chance to help him.

DeSantis should avoid the Trump Administration.  This Iran war is the albatross no one wants.  Trump bit off more than he can chew and is hoping the Iranians will be reasonable.  ZERO CHANCE of that happening.  His only option all along was to kill massive quantities of the Iranians, and he is not willing to do that.  With no exit strategy, the Republicans are most likely f***ed in November.

He went to war with a whack-a-mole country.  He can kill 50 levels of leadership, and a new one will pop up worse or as bad as all that came before.  Only solution is to kill them in such large quantities that they actually surrender.

Agreed.  Trump has no exit strategy in Iran. The blockade is set up for now with threats from Trump to Iran, but they don't even have a designated leader from what I can tell.  That blockade can't last indefinitely; meanwhile Iran rearms with the help of China and Putin.

As for DeSantis being POTUS, yes I think he'd be excellent.  One, I don't know if he wants the job and two, his personality isn't one that people are drawn to.  His record though speaks for itself.
