Spirit Airlines prepares to shut down after Trump administration bailout falls through

Spirit Airlines is preparing to shut down after failing to secure the critical financial support from the government needed to keep operating.

The struggling budget airline had been negotiating with the Trump administration for a $500 million rescue package that would have provided cash in exchange for equity-like warrants, giving the government up to a 90 percent stake. However, the effort has stalled because Spirit has been unable to secure the necessary backing from bondholders and government stakeholders, people familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal Friday.

There were reportedly disagreements within the Trump administration over whether and how to fund the bailout, while not all Spirit bondholders were on board with the deal, either, the sources claimed.

However, President Donald Trump also told reporters in the Oval Office Friday that his administration offered a “final” bailout to Spirit, warning the carrier may be forced to liquidate without it.

“If we could do it, we’d do it, but only if it’s a good deal this weekend, because they haven’t gotten a deal looking at it,” Trump said, CNBC reports. “I said I’d like to save the jobs but we’ll have an announcement sometime today. ... We gave them a final proposal.”..............

The federal government shouldn't be bailing out any business unless it is directly tied to national security.

Spirit Airlines is reportedly shutting down permanently on Saturday, and many are now blaming Democrat Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

Three years ago, Warren demanded that the then-Biden administration block JetBlue from buying and taking over Spirit Airlines for $3.8 billion.

The senator at the time submitted a letter to then-Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg arguing that the responsible decision was to block JetBlue from merging with Spirit Airlines.

What are the consequences for Biden’s DOJ and a federal judge being 100% wrong? Nothing. Biden and the judge said Spirit and Jet Blue’s merger would be too powerful, wiped out $3.8 billion for shareholders & now airline is gone.

FWIW, JetBlue merger failed because a judge, appointed by Ronald Reagan, said the deal was illegal.

However, months before the airline first filed for bankruptcy in 2024, fellow low-cost carrier JetBlue Airways called off its intended $3.8 billion acquisition of Spirit following years of opposition by then-President Joe Biden, Department of Transportation (DOT) Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Warren, who was the planned merger’s biggest opponent in Congress.

Between the time the merger was first announced in July 2022 and its termination in March 2024, Warren, a former presidential candidate and leading figure in the progressive movement, forcefully warned against the move and lobbied the Biden administration to stop it.

A former top official in the Biden administration is questioning the decision by his Department of Justice to stop the Jet Blue and Spirit Airlines merger after Spirit announced its closure on Saturday.

Neera Tanden, the CEO of the Center for American Progress, served as U.S. Domestic Policy Council from 2023 to 2025 and senior advisor and staff secretary to former President Biden from 2021 to 2023.

"Given the news today that Spirit Airlines is shuttering and thousands of people are losing their jobs, I think we should honestly assess whether the Garland DoJ stopping the JetBlue merger with Spirit Airlines was the right call. Perhaps it was but any analysis must consider as part of the equation the loss to so many families ro [to] decide," she wrote on X.

Tanden responded to a user's post, writing, "Maybe the merger would have made both Jet Blue and Spirit better?  Jet Blue is a perfectly comfortable airline."

Garland worked to stop the merger and it was ultimately blocked by a federal judge in 2024.
