A new comprehensive study on the effect of temperature extremes on human mortality shows that cold is far more lethal than heat.

There’s one conclusion that can be drawn from this: the recent, mostly natural warming is saving lives.

The recent study reported by ScienceDaily article, titled “Cold weather linked to 40,000 extra heart deaths each year in the U.S.,” summarizes a major study presented at the American College of Cardiology’s Annual Scientific Session in March, 2026.

Cold far more dangerous than heat

The study found that cold weather is a much bigger risk to heart health than hot weather. In the United States, cold temperatures are linked to far more cardiovascular deaths than heatwaves are.

Unlike a heatwave, which usually lasts a few days, “moderate cold” can last for many weeks and cause more damage to the body over time.

The fact there are no Muslim terrorists at the poles bombing it, for practice if for nothing else, proves it is true.  I don't know if they get the full allotment of virgins if they just freeze to death.

No really - I got *NO* venomous snakes. Only two types of venomous spiders... A helluva lot less ticks (including no alphagal)... NO cicadas *ever*. In the summer, no matter what the temp is during the day, the minute the sun goes down, the heat goes away - nearly every night is in the 40s or low 50s... NO humidity, so shade works.

You can dress for cold - even deep cold... you can only undress so far for heat, and then you just have to put up with it. Even your water is hot. Water up in here is coming straight off the glaciers - even in the triple digits of August, you can go park your ass in a creek and be cold -shivering cold - in seconds.

Nah. You can keep your heat.

Also absent here: Termites. I am ever amazed how unprotected wood here lasts decades in a cold, dry climate. It may be windworn, sunbleached, and somewhat brittle, but still intact after a century. Back where I grew up, it'd be gone in a decade, lost to fungus and insects.
The buildings in town that have cockroaches got them from people or goods that came up from further south, just along for the ride.

I have heard of people blowing down the plumbing in a building, and letting thirty below weather in for a week or two to get rid of them (back a coupe decades when winters seemed colder). I'm now sure how well that worked, but there's a lot that would not survive it.
