It must be nice to be a leftist
The freedom to be unbound by things like truth and the burden of intense critical thinking sounds liberating, and to be honest, I’m a little bit jealous.

I’ve got a couple of family members who don’t subscribe to the “right” views (an intentional double entendre), and any time politics are even remotely broached as a topic of conversation, I find myself still in shock about how little they actually understand, and how little they’re tracking on. Sure, I can intellectually know that they’re not thinking individuals, and I’m fully aware that they make no effort to seriously and legitimately educate themselves, but when you’re face to face with it? It’s still jarring, and a total trip.
When telling one about organ harvesting under communist China, she responded, “That doesn’t make sense. The government isn’t allowed to do that.” What don’t you get about communism? How did you miss that the limits placed upon the U.S. government are extremely unique in current times, and world history as a whole? Where have you been?
At another point in time while discussing the need for solid borders, that same family member (who promotes mass migration and open borders) asked, in complete sincerity, “How do they [illegal aliens] steal from you?” The obvious reply? “Taxes.” Genuinely confused, she said, “but, how??” (As if it’s me who’s missing something.) I explained that they use the hospitals, our schools, and disproportionately access first responder services, and I kid you not, she responded with this: “But that’s not taxes, that’s money from the government”—and I think my eyebrows hit my hairline. This is someone with a master’s degree by the way, and she’s a teacher.
When another blazed into the room after we hadn’t seen each in years, the first thing out of her mouth was “Olivia, I’m all about the environment. That’s just like, my ‘thing.’” A day or so later, the topic of wind turbines came up, but she thought they were wind mills. As we all know, a huge difference. The windmills of Don Quixote era used animal fat and greased leather to lubricate the turning mechanisms, and it actually just ran on wind energy alone. Modern turbines? They of course use petroleum products (all derived from crude oil), and many also house backup generators, using diesel fuel. (Though I think wind turbines are abysmal in essentially every way, especially for the environment, I don’t subscribe to the idea that the use of crude oil is some existential threat—but she does.) She had no idea though, despite being an activist for this sort of policy and energy transition, voting that way, so her insecurity got the best of her and she broke down and started crying, and we were forced to change the subject.
