A "Bulging Lobe" Of Polar Vortex Madness Headed For U.S. East

Mother Nature across the Mid-Atlantic can only be described by the Katy Perry lyric, “You’re hot, then you’re cold,” as a meteorologist warns that a "tropospheric polar vortex" will sweep across the Lower 48 this weekend into early next week, abruptly ending the summer-like conditions in Washington, D.C.

"A bulging lobe of the tropospheric 'polar vortex' will be tracking through the Lower 48, bringing a cold front and much cooler air to the Eastern U.S.," meteorologist Ryan Maue wrote on X.

He added, "We'll wave goodbye to the nearly unprecedented mid-April heat wave."

Folks in the Capitol Beltway will see a 40°F swing in high temperatures from yesterday's 93°F to Monday's 52°F, according to Bloomberg data.

Wild swing for DC high temps plus the forecast.

Significant temperature swings are pretty much normal here in north-central California in March/April, and again in September/October. In recent weeks I did a 5K in fairly warm weather, and then a couple of weeks later (last weekend) did an 8K in which the lasy mile and a half was steady rain. I've seen similar swings in late September, one year doing a half in mid-upper 70s, and in another year, doing a 5K, starting at 80F and finishing at 90F, with some doing the half finishing at >100F. Weather swings in spring and fall are ordinary/normal, here.

Are spring and fall weather patterns in the East Coast steady and stable?

The heck with the weather @PeteS in CA  I admire you for doing a 5k and 8k .... that's quite an accomplishment!
Live in  harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly, do not claim to be wiser than you are.  Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.  If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

Thanks! I walk, not run, but try to keep active. I mainly did the 8k (~5 miles) because there's a fairly steep hill on the course, up ~220 feet over half a mile and the same down over half a mile. Also it had rained, so it was muddy and I had to be really careful. Ironically, I was the last finisher of the 8K distance and got first place in my age group. yogi555

32 degrees overnight and this morning in D.C..

My burgundy maple tree's fully developed leaves were all shriveled up...first time I've seen this.
