You think DC lacks these things? Washington monument, lincolh memorial, all the war memorials. It's a memorial lovers wet dream basically (as it should be). But this just reminds me too much of Roman Emperor kind of stuff.

President Trump is proposing to build it across from the Lincoln Memorial in the middle of the roundabout just west of the Arlington Memorial Bridge. Currently the space is open grass and from what I can tell it was intended to be the home of a monument.

If it is built with donations and no taxpayer funds then what's it to you?

Looking around I am finding that around $15 million for legal fees and etc. will come from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and this is normal for monuments and memorials in DC. The arch requires Congressional approval and this also involves the NEA which performs oversight.

The $100 million for the arch itself will come from private donations. My family will definitely kick in to support this.

Some in the media are trying to portray the $15m NEA cost as the price of the arch itself which is not true.
