It's Time for a Leaner, Meaner, NATO

The Last Wire

By Luis Gonzalez — April 9, 2026

The war with Iran may be over, and the United States acted with strength and speed to defend its interests. But what the conflict also revealed is a long standing strategic problem. America still relies on a bloated, consensus‑driven military alliance that is neither as reliable nor as ready as it needs to be.

For more than seven decades the North Atlantic Treaty Organization has been the pillar of transatlantic defense. It was forged in the shadow of the Soviet threat when the specter of Soviet tanks rolling across Europe demanded a united Western response. NATO’s core promise, articulated in Article 5 of its treaty, states that an attack on one ally is treated as an attack on all.

Yet today, NATO’s structure and performance have drifted far from the strategic purpose that justified America’s extraordinary investment in the alliance. A complex alliance of 32 members now includes countries that are hesitant to act when the United States calls for support, preferring narrow national interests over shared strategic purpose in crucial moments.

Yes, NATO’s defenders argue the alliance has adapted since the Cold War. Its roles now span cyber defense, crisis management, and missions far beyond the North Atlantic. But adaptation without measurable results often just means more bureaucracy rather than more capability.

Former U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates warned in 2011, “NATO is at risk of becoming irrelevant if it does not demonstrate operational capability and enforceable commitments.” What the war in Iran should remind us is this. If America is prepared to act with speed and force to defend its own interests, it should build allied structures capable of the same. Not the cumbersome, slow, consensus‑based alliance that NATO has become.

Critics of a new model will argue that the United States already gets support from NATO allies when it matters. But history paints a more nuanced picture. After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, NATO invoked Article 5 for the first and only time in its history, treating the attacks on New York and Washington as attacks on the entire alliance. Despite this symbolic solidarity, the alliance’s operational role was limited — NATO assets were deployed in defensive roles over North America, and the alliance later assumed command of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan. Even then, the United States chose not to involve NATO in the initial assault, preferring a coalition of the willing under American leadership.

This selective participation is why commentators sometimes paint NATO as more political than practical, an institution good for ceremonies and consensus but not always for decisive action. Because NATO is a consensus body each action must be approved by all. That means decisions can be stalled or watered down not because allies are hostile to the United States but because they prioritize their own domestic politics or strategic caution.

Some defenders of the alliance warn that abandoning or weakening NATO would destabilize global order. But that argument presumes that size equals capability or reliability. History suggests otherwise. NATO’s greatest purpose was deterrence during an existential standoff with the Soviet Union. After the Cold War it expanded its roles into peacekeeping, nation building, counterterrorism, and cyber defense. Strategic clarity has suffered.

If the goal is not merely an alliance but a reliable one the United States should pivot toward what might be called Strategic NATO. This would be a smaller coalition of allies that demonstrate consistent contributions to defense and share strategic interests beyond rhetoric. In a Strategic NATO, membership would not be symbolic. Countries must commit deployable troops to be part of the alliance. Allies must maintain forces capable of rapid response and actively participate in missions determined by collective strategy.

Without these commitments, countries cannot rely on membership alone to influence decisions or expect protection under the core of the alliance. This is the only way to ensure an alliance that is lean, fast, and decisive.

The first thing is NATO needs to make the argument as to why it needs to exist.

Because a hostile menace, still intent on conquering all of Europe, still exists at its eastern borders ... just like in 1949.

The break-up of the evil Soviet Union changed nothing, the threat of utter destruction is still there, 1000 miles to the East.

THAT'S why Europe has to stay unified and vigilant.
The elimination of the evil Soviet Union was one of the most glorious moments in Human History!!

The first thing is NATO needs to make the argument as to why it needs to exist.

NATO was created to keep the Russians out of Europe and it still does this.

However, since the US carries most of the burdens of the alliance and since those who benefit are refusing to allow us to use the bases we pay for then we can remain in NATO all while withdrawing our forces from those countries that clearly oppose our policies.

Should Russia attack our NATO allies then we should curbstomp the Russians.

But should Argentina relieve the UK of the Falkland Islands again we should let them handle that on their own. Should France encounter a problem in one of their overseas territories? Not our problem.

Should any NATO member face existential threats from the Muslim invaders they saw fit to invite into their countries then 1) this is not our problem and 2) we should refuse refugees from those countries if they are members of political parties that have historically opposed the USA specifically or in general.

Also, any country opposed to our use of NATO bases should be denied access to our bases wherever they may be.

The USA should expect our allies to also be our friends.  tipping hat!!

OMFG enough with the f'ing Z scaremongering estrogen propaganda.

Europe has expanded it's welfare state on our backs for decades instead of taking care of business. Now it's taking that a step further and using it's welfare system to import immigrants and Islamify their countries.

If they are going to rabidly pursue a path of self-destruction, why should we be involved with them?

When they achieve their Euro Caliphate, they can take on the Russians. To be honest, in that situation the Russians are the lesser of two evils.
The Republic is lost.

Let Europe do Europe. They’re not participating, they’re just enjoying the benefits of our largesse.

The enemy is less than thirty minutes away.  That’s how long it takes an ICBM launched from Moscow to hit DC.

We need mobility, speed and commitment to troops. Not some messed up “well, let’s see what we can do” crap.

Not just willingness, but the capability.
The Royal Navy (UK) is such a pathetic shadow of itself, it isn't funny. Two combatant vessels that might be ready in a few weeks? Hardly a rapid reaction force, and made even more pathetic when the historical might of a navy that spanned the globe is considered.  The other NATO Maritime 'powers' (France, Spain) are similarly pathetic, especially when one considers their navies once ruled the seas.

That isn't a measure of the service personnel, so much as the command structure and the priorities of the government.

It seems that the relevance of a threat grows more removed from the public psyche as those who last fought against an existential threat age and die. It is far more relevant for those nations who most recently achieved their liberation from more totalitarian governments, and who are not actively surrendering to a totalitarian theocracy in orgasmic paroxysms of self destructive acts described deceptively as charity.

The most nimble militaries will be found in those nations more accustomed to facing such threats, and actively resisting them. Poland, Finland, the Balkans, Ukraine, and others have seen the elephant, stared it down (or are in the process of doing so) and understand the threats from without and within.

Those most threatened obviously have the greatest interest in defying the current threats, and for the first time in centuries, the threat is theological in nature, in a form poorly understood by a West that has abandoned its religious fervor and with it, much of the culture that empowered it to recognize and resist that threat. That bodes ill, not only for those nations sliding into dhimmitude, their cultures, and peoples, but for all of Europe as those points of weakness undermine the structures and weaken the elements which supported them in the past.

NATO, as a functional entity, will have to shed many of its traditional entanglements, and if to be something we will continue with, will need to be whittled down to those willing to and capable of reacting to threats in a meaningful way, instead of dithering over the mess of their internal malaise.

The reality is that ending NATO will force Europe to defend itself if it wishes to do so, and that will sharply cut the money available for social programs, which will in turn greatly reduce incentives for Muslim interlopers to migrate there.

Win-win for the US.

I was assured here at the beginning of the Ukraine invasion that oh yes yes yes yes, Europe was perfectly capable of taking care of itself and stop further Russian expansion and Russia's piss poor military could never actually take on a NATO nation. What was claimed as good then is good now.

Europe can defend itself.

NATO needs to be scaled to what is required to meet anticipated threats.

The Europeans can't be trusted to protect themselves.  They have a history of stabbing each other in the back and selling each other out.  They are duplicitous imperial schemers.

Well I agree that Eastern Europe is where the dividing line is, and will remain.
The Post WWII powers that were have become insulated from virtually all but a nuclear threat after the fall of the Iron Curtain, with intervening States which have won their freedom in the last half century and are neither complacent about it nor have any great desire to return to the yoke of totalitarianism providing a buffer.

Behind that wall of Eastern Europe, the former empires of European Colonization have grown smaller, softer, and complacent, and we have provided the penumbra in which they sit, with their beverage of choice, secure enough in their peace dividends that they recklessly tinker with everything from their power grids to their very cultural stability via inviting in the spiritual descendants of those they once fought so desperately to expel. Those memories are largely relegated to medieval tomes in venerated but forgotten archives, inked on parchment and largely forgotten in the shadow of more recent conflicts, and likely imperiled by the coming one--a self-inflicted wound.
Those who recall harder times will tend to be stronger, their senses more finely tuned to detect existential threats, and their readiness reflecting their will to resist a threat they know to be real.

I can't see us not backing Ukraine at this point, especially with their edge in counterdrone warfare and interceptor drones. Perhaps, in our own way, we have connected them with States which not only have deep pockets but the desire and now, need, to protect themselves from incoming ordnance. If noshing else, that will benefit Ukraine in terms of funding--a more quid pro quo capitalistic arrangement.
