Minnesota, Illinois AGs Sue Over Federal Orders Keeping Coal Plants Running
Federal emergency powers are being tested as states argue no grid crisis exists.
by Elyse S. Apel  April 08, 2026, 9:15 AM i

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison is challenging the Trump administration over orders requiring coal-fired power plants in Indiana to remain open past their planned retirement dates. [some emphasis, links added]

Ellison, joined by Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul, filed the petitions for judicial review against U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Ellison argued the U.S. Department of Energy “unlawfully” invoked emergency powers to keep the plants operating, a move he said will increase costs for ratepayers throughout the Midwest, including those in Minnesota.

The states are challenging federal orders affecting the R.M. Schahfer power plant in Wheatfield, Indiana, and the F.B. Culley generating station in Newburgh, Indiana. Both facilities had been slated for retirement.

Saw this clip by the MA Guv on Gutfeld last night

It'd be funny if this woman wasn't so insane.  Got to feel sorry for @DefiantMassRINO

I display the Confederate Battle Flag in honor of my great great great grandfathers who spilled blood at Wilson's Creek and Shiloh.  5 others served in the WBTS with honor too.  Note:  Posts may also be allegorical in nature, and not literal.

1.) Do not weep for me.  At least I don't live in California.

2.) More solar, wind, and storage Munchkins increases unreliable supply, but does not lower cost per killowatt hour.

3.) The guv'nuh only wants to buy more of the gourmet Munchkins that cost too much.

When I saw them closing the coal, nuclear, and LNG power plants without additional generation and transmission capacity to make up for the loss, I took Solar City on their offer for solar leaseback to avoid some of the utility increases that would be coming my way.

For the last 2 Winters, natural gas customers have been getting hosed because supply can't meet demand.  Utility companies wanted to increase supply, but the Global Climate Change dweebs wouldn't allow it.  Also, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has been warning for years that Massachusetts was headed towards a natural gas squeeze during Winters.

Let our pain and suffering be a warning to the rest of the country.  Build more generation capacity of all kinds.  Build more transmission capacity.  Increase pipeline capacity.  Build more LNG terminals.  Bring back coal and nuclear (Thorium maybe?).

The Guv'nah's demonstration to the unwashed masses only demonstrated that Dems don't understand free market economics.  Liberals want Government to limit which Munchkin varieties are available to the public.  Sure, she'll let me have more coconut Munchkins, but chocolate glazed Munchkins will be verboten.

The liberal "solutions" will be government subsidies, bankrupting utilities by making them eat costs, rationing, less affordable energy, and more expensive energy.  Think California around 2000 when Enron was rigging the California electrity market by monopolizing the one transmission line that connected the southern California grid with the northern California grid.  California regulators were bankrupting the utlity companies by not allowing them to pass on higher costs to consumers.

Let FERC disconnect those states from the interstate grids.  Why should Minnesota and Illinois virtue signaling be allowed to increase electricity rates for other members of their ISO's?

States that close Federally compliant power plants should be disconnected from interstate pipelines and transmission lines.  Let 'em go it alone.

If New York state won't allow new pipelines to New England, disconnect New York States from interstate and international supplies of natural gas.

States that enjoy the fruits also need to do some of the toil.
