Army Approves New Hand Grenade
The Army has approved for full material release the first new lethal hand grenade since 1968, the service announced in a news release.
The new M111 Offensive Hand Grenade will replace the Mk3A2 hand grenade series, which has an obsolete body and fuze. The Mk3A2 is restricted for use because of its asbestos body, according to the Army news release. The M111 has a plastic body that is fully consumed during detonation.
“We’ve given our soldiers and joint warfighters the flexibility to determine in the field which type of grenade will best suit the current situation they are facing, be it open space or confined area,” said Tiffany Cheng, one of the DEVCOM Armaments Center engineers that developed the M111.
The M111 was developed by the Capabilities Program Executive Ammunition and Energetics and the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Armaments Center at Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey.
