Ron DeSantis on Wednesday signed a comprehensive election integrity bill into law, framing the measure as a “gold standard” effort to prevent noncitizens from voting and to close loopholes he argued are being “gamed” by bad actors.
Flanked by state leaders and legislators, DeSantis signed the Florida version of the “SAVE Act,” HB 991, which mandates citizenship verification for voter registration and replaces some forms of nonsecure identification, such as student IDs, with requirements for valid proof of Florida residency.
“We went from being the laughingstock of the nation in the year 2000 to being the gold standard of election integrity here in the state of Florida,” DeSantis said. “This is something that we need to do every two years […] to make sure that we are closing the loopholes. Because no matter what we put on paper, you’re going to have bad actors trying to circumvent them.”
The governor was joined by Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson, who praised the state’s proactive stance.
“Legal elections are the cornerstone of democracy,” Simpson said. “The elected officials standing here today are leading the nation on election integrity. I hope that our congressional and U.S. Senate partners in Washington will have the same courage that we’ve had here in the state of Florida to make this a nationwide issue.”...............
