War Secretary Pete Hegseth asked Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George to step down and take immediate retirement Thursday in a sweeping leadership shakeup as the U.S. military remains engaged in combat with Iran.

A senior War Department official told Fox that Hegseth called George Thursday and asked for his immediate retirement, saying, "It was time for a leadership change in the Army."

Chief spokesperson Sean Parnell said in a statement on X, "General Randy A. George will be retiring from his position as the 41st Chief of Staff of the Army effective immediately. The Department of War is grateful for General George’s decades of service to our nation. We wish him well in his retirement."

An Army official told Fox News Hegseth did not give George any reason for asking him to step down.

George, the Army’s top uniformed officer and a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was nominated by President Joe Biden and confirmed by the Senate in 2023. He had been expected to serve a four-year term through roughly 2027.

Pentagon Shakeup Continues With Additional Key Departures

Published 11 hours ago

By Cullen McCue

War Secretary Pete Hegseth has directed the removal of two additional senior Army generals as part of a leadership transition at the Pentagon. The latest removals come just hours after Army Chief of Staff General Randy George announced his early retirement after being explicitly asked by Hegseth.

Major General William Green, who served as the Army’s Chief of Chaplains, and General David M. Hodne, the commanding general of the U.S. Army Transformation and Training Command, were also relieved of their duties on Thursday, according to a report from NBC News.

Available details on the specific circumstances of these personnel actions remain limited. Official statements from the Pentagon have not provided reasons for the decisions regarding Green or Hodne, nor have they outlined next steps for their positions or any immediate replacements.

The moves align with broader efforts by the Defense Department to adjust senior uniformed leadership. No further public information has been released concerning the operational impact or any performance-related factors in these cases.

The latest firings follow the simultaneous request for the immediate retirement of Army Chief of Staff General Randy George. “General Randy A. George will be retiring from his position as the 41st Chief of Staff of the Army effective immediately,” Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed in a statement.

“The Department of War is grateful for General George’s decades of service to our nation. We wish him well in his retirement.”

Hegseth asks Army’s top general to retire, fires two others as Iran war rages

Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George seen visiting soldiers in 2023. (U.S. Army)
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Thursday asked U.S. Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George to step down and retire effective immediately, a Pentagon official told Military Times.

The abrupt move, one of three significant changes made by Hegseth the same day, cuts short George’s tenure, which began in September 2023, well before the end of the typical four-year term.

The Pentagon intends to replace him with a leader aligned with Hegseth and President Donald Trump’s vision for the Army, the official added. They did not specify what this vision entails.

George has more than four decades of military service, according to the Army. He was commissioned as an infantry officer from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1988 and served in the Gulf War, with subsequent deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said that the current vice chief of staff of the Army, Gen. Christopher LaNeve, will replace George on an interim basis.

I'm sure the media will howl and claim the end is near over this, but if I remember my history correctly, a certain Gen. Douglas McArthur was fired by the Truman administration in the Korean War and, SHAZAAM, generals are still being fired.

@CynicalPublius
So SecWar Pete Hegseth just fired Maj. Gen. William Green Jr., the US Army’s (now former) Chief of Chaplains.

I have zero insider information on this, but I have my own theories as to why it happened.

Green’s most important event as the Chief of Chaplains was to produce the United States Army’s “Spiritual Fitness Guide.”

Published in July of 2025, Stars & Stripes wrote an article on this with a link to the guide.

(I’ll put all related links in a comment email one below.)

I’ll save you the trouble of clicking on that link — it goes to the US Army’s website, and it’s “404 Page Not Found.”

That kind of explains a lot, doesn’t it?

So I went and found a full copy of that “Guide” elsewhere (in, of all places, a “Military Atheist” website; link in the post below).

Go check it out.  Do a word search for the word “God.”  Go ahead.  Do it.  It shows up exactly ONCE.  How can you have a guide to spiritual fitness without mentioning God?????  But what that “guide" DOES TALK about is a bunch on New Age gobbledygook.

Let me give you a taste:

"The Soldier’s Spirit lies at the intersection of external influences (stimulus) and applied behavior (response). It is the vital junction that supports the weight of life and drives Soldier action. In a relatable way, the Soldier’s spirit is much like a compass in life, providing substance to the direction that they take in life and the decisions they make. This reality makes understanding and developing the Soldier's spirit crucial, as the direction of a Soldier ultimately shapes the direction and well-being of the Army.”

The primary mission of the Chaplain Corps is to “provide religious support” to soldiers (from their official mission statement).

Yet the US Army’s “Spiritual Fitness Guide” reads like it was written by John Lennon and Yoko Ono on a bender—not a word of encouragement for a soldier’s faith, but pages upon pages of New Age nonsense that makes Universalism sound like rational thought and really does imagine no religion.

Yeah, one does not need to understand why a man of faith like Pete Hegseth fired a wishy washy New Age Pharisee like Green.

Hegseth has his reasons and we have to trust that whatever the plans are they are necessary for the U.S. to succeed.  Losing recent aircraft is a huge concern....boots on the ground may now be inevitable.

Live in  harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly, do not claim to be wiser than you are.  Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.  If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

I helped out a political candidate years back who had been a Major at the Pentagon. One of the reasons he left was that he said so much of the brass were just paper shufflers who created as much bureaucracy as they could to make their departments as large as possible.

So I'm good with using the Iran war to clean out the fluff and the chaff that are just milking the job.

Good strategy actually.

Hmmm...perhaps "Loose lips...sinks ships"??

That too. Too much seditious sympathizing crap in the upper ranks.

They should go to Leavenworth and just be happy they were only summarily fired.

As @DCPatriot noted, we only think of these Obama/Biden generals put there for woke DEI purposes, but after particularly Miley and a few others, I think we need to question whether they were put there to leak information to everyone from the media to foreign adversaries in order to paralyze and incapacitate our military from being a force on the playing field.

In other words literal seditious and treasonous behavior.
