WASHINGTON (AP) - More than 10,000 American troops are helping enforce the blockade on Iranian ports, and while no ships have yet been boarded, the U.S. military said Thursday that it is warning Iran-linked ships that it could fire warning shots or escalate to other force if they try to outrun the Navy.

In the first three days of the military action, 14 ships have turned around rather than confront the naval blockade, according to U.S. Central Command, which oversees the Iran war.

Some Iran-linked or sanctioned vessels that have left the Persian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz, the crucial waterway for energy shipments, have appeared to halt their movements, turn off their radio transponders or head back toward Iran's coast, shipping data firms say.

The U.S. Navy prevented an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel from leaving Iran on Tuesday after it attempted to evade the maritime blockade that began Monday, U.S. Central Command announced.

The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Spruance redirected the vessel back toward Iran after it fled Bandar Abbas, exited the Strait of Hormuz and was making its way along the Iranian coastline, according to a CENTCOM release.


“Ten vessels have now been turned around and zero ships have broken through since the start of the U.S. blockade on Monday,” the command’s post on X stated.

The U.S. Navy blockade, which involves 10,000 troops, over a dozen warships and more than 100 fighter and surveillance aircraft, went into effect Monday after President Donald Trump announced on social media that the U.S. would seal off the Strait of Hormuz following failed peace talks between the U.S. and Iran.

US blockade may be 'more powerful than bombing' says Trump

The U.S. blockade of Iranian ports, which began April 13 after ceasefire talks ended in Islamabad, may prove more powerful than military strikes alone, President Donald Trump said Thursday.

Speaking to reporters before departing for Las Vegas, Trump also said the relationship between the United States and Iran had improved.

“We have a very good relationship with Iran right now,” Trump said.

“As hard as it is to believe, and I think it’s a combination of about four weeks of bombing and a very powerful blockade,” the president continued.

“The blockade is maybe more powerful than the bombing, if you want to know the truth,” Trump added.

It was the biggest gravy train of pure oil the world has ever seen, never to be seen again.

My brother worked Safaniya field offshore Saudi, the world's biggest offshore field ever found, comprised at the time (1979) of a a few hundred oil wells making a total of 1.5 million bopd.

They were simply tied in at the wellhead to pipelines and brought into an onshore battery where all gas was flared.  His entire assignment while there was to determine how much oil came from each well, as no one knew whether a few wells only were making that 1.5 million bopd.

1. In 1976 I was the third guy hired from outside the company (ARAMCO) into the then brand Gas Operations Division. Over the next several years we installed and started up over 3 billion SCF per day of gas gathering and processing. One night shortly thereafter a buddy and I got in a light plane and flew around over the area and could not tell where we had put a flare out.

2. 1n 1978 I was involved in the design of the Safaniya Gas Plant at Fluor Houston .

3. The first well ever drilled in Saudi came on in 1938. When I left in the early eighties that well was still producing over 1000 bopd without any aid.

The U.S. is preparing to take on Iran’s fast-attack boats using a playbook it already has tested in another theater — lethal strikes on small vessels tied to drug trafficking networks in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific.

Since September 2025, U.S. forces have conducted dozens of deadly strikes on suspected drug-trafficking vessels, part of a broader military campaign targeting cartel-linked networks. The U.S. campaign against drug-trafficking boats offers a glimpse of how American forces handle small, fast-moving targets at sea.

Officials now suggest similar tactics could be used against Iranian vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

President Donald Trump made that link explicit in a Truth Social post Monday, warning that any Iranian boats approaching the blockade would be "immediately ELIMINATED, using the same system of kill that we use against the drug dealers on boats at Sea … It is quick and brutal."

Since the campaign began, U.S. Southern Command has carried out dozens of strikes on vessels, killing more than 160 people and destroying dozens of boats. Those operations rely on surveillance, rapid targeting and precision strikes, capabilities that could also be used in the Gulf.

But in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific, U.S. forces are targeting nonstate actors with limited ability to respond. In the Strait of Hormuz, they would be confronting Iran’s military — armed, organized, and operating in one of the most strategically sensitive waterways in the world.

Applying that approach in the Persian Gulf, against a state-backed military force, carries far higher risks.

 Strait of Hormuz ‘completely open’ until cease-fire’s end as Trump celebrates tumbling oil prices

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on Friday announced that the Strait of Hormuz is now “completely open” for all ships, so long as the Israel-Lebanon cease-fire remains in place — with President Trump quickly celebrating the resulting tumbling gas prices.

“In line with the ceasefire in Lebanon, the passage for all passage for all commercial vessels through Strait of Hormuz is declared completely open for the remaining period of ceasefire, on the coordinated route as already announced by Ports and Maritime Organisation of the Islamic Rep. of Iran,” he said in a post to X.

President Trump then quickly took to Truth Social to share the news himself.

“IRAN HAS JUST ANNOUNCED THAT THE STRAIT OF IRAN IS FULLY OPEN AND READY FOR FULL PASSAGE. THANK YOU!”

The US will maintain its blockade of Iranian ports — which does not impede other traffic — to keep the pressure on for Tehran to come to the table for a peace deal, he added.

It’s good news that the Strait of Hormuz has now reopened.

This must be a long lasting and workable solution, without tolls or restrictions on routes.

Today we announced our joint plan with France and other international partners to protect freedom of navigation.

We need to see a return to peace and stability, and a permanent ceasefire.

On the issue of Israel, you and I agree, but they are under a ceasefire and I believe Trump is trying to maintain some sort of peace.  Will Israel or Lebanon listen??  Time will tell.

I don't think the US can call the shots on whether Israel has permission to bomb Hezbollah.

The entire northern part of Israel for years has been subject to missiles fired into it from Lebanon and people killed from incursions from Lebanon.  That threat has nothing to do with Iran ceasefire.

It is Israel's sole right to defend itself, regardless of what the US might wish.

In fact, Israel has been the US's proxy to revenge the murder of 241 American soldiers by the Lebanese jihadists of 1983.

Optics games. I would wager Israel has bombed most if not all of the high value targets they can get from the air. At some point in a bombing campaign, the law of diminishing returns applies.

I did not see any prohibition on taking targets out by other means...
