On Thursday, April 9, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan received a phone call from his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi. According to a statement from the Saudi Foreign Ministry, this marked the first publicly announced direct communication between the two sides since Iran launched retaliatory strikes against Gulf neighbors, including Saudi Arabia, since hostilities erupted.

“The call focused on reviewing developments in the situation and ways to slow the pace of tensions so as to help restore security and stability in the region,” a Saudi government spokesman said of the discussion. No separate detailed statement from the Iranian side has been released regarding the content of the call, though Iranian officials have confirmed the discussion covered bilateral relations and regional developments.

Thursday’s conversation follows reports from early March indicating that Saudi officials had intensified diplomatic back-channel engagement with Iran to contain the broader regional conflict. Those earlier interactions, involving security and diplomatic officials, were described by European sources as urgent efforts to prevent escalation and protect economic interests, including energy infrastructure in the Persian Gulf.

The timing coincides with a separate two-week ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran, which was mediated by Pakistan and took effect on April 8.

President Donald Trump said he doesn’t need a backup plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, pointing to Iranian military losses.

“You don’t need a backup plan,” Trump said. “Their military is defeated. Their military is gone. We’ve degraded just about everything. They have very few missiles. They have little manufacturing capability. We’ve hit them hard.”

He noted that the main goal of a deal with Tehran is the prevention of Iran acquiring a nuclear weapon.

“I think it’s already been regime change, but we never had that as a criterion,” he said. “No nuclear weapons. That’s 99% of it.”

A sanction tanker carrying Iranian oil was anchored Friday near an Indian port.

The U.S. sanctioned vessel, identified as Jaya, has been linked to so-called “identity-switching," a practice used by tankers to evade sanctions, Iran International reported, citing industry reports.

The ship was set to deliver the first Iranian crude oil to India since 2019.

BREAKING: Iran cannot fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz because it "cannot find" some of the mines it placed in the waterway and lacks the capability to remove them, per multiple US officials cited by NYT.

The mines were laid quickly by small IRGC boats, and some have since drifted from their original positions.

NYT also reports that Araghchi's earlier "technical limitations" comment on reopening was specifically about the mine removal problem.

The thought occurred to me today that since Kushner and Witkoff hold no formal government position, then I wonder what kind of records they are generating about whatever talks, meetings, negotiations, deals, etc., and if, and how, those will be ever preserved in the National Archives for the official record?  Are are any of their notes, emails, and documents generated during this "work" subject to FOIA?  And are they discoverable in court, if any litigation ever arises out of these meetings?

The U.S. Treasury Department has allowed purchases of Russian oil and products at sea since mid-March with a 30-day waiver that expires on April 11, part of efforts to control global energy prices during ​the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran.

Russia's presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev had said the original waiver would free 100 million barrels of ​Russian crude, equal to almost a day's worth of global output.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent met ⁠with Trump in the White House on Thursday to talk about extending the waiver, and they agreed it was a good ​idea, one of the sources said, asking not to be named.
