What we know

    Two people were killed when a passenger jet struck a Port Authority vehicle at LaGuardia Airport late last night, officials said. They are the pilot and co-pilot.
    41 people were injured in the collision and were treated in local hospitals, and 32 have been released, the Port Authority said. Some are seriously injured.
    The collision involved a Jazz Aviation flight operated on behalf of Air Canada. The plane was carrying 72 passengers and four crew members.
    The Port Authority aircraft rescue and firefighting truck was responding to unrelated reports of an "odor" on a United flight when it was struck at 11:40 p.m. last night, according to a Port Authority spokesperson.
    LaGuardia is now closed and won't reopen until 2 p.m. today at the earliest, as authorities investigate. The closure could be extended and police have warned people to avoid the area.

The Rats are already blaming Trump but the truth is that the cause is the prior neglect of the FAA going back several administrations, as well as Biden's stupid policy of imposing DEI on the ATC training process, which discriminated against white candidates.  Now there's not enough controllers to safely handle all the air traffic in the U.S. today...they're all overworked and overwhelmed.

I listened to ATC Ground control recordings.  The fire truck was cleared to cross the runway.    Even so the protocol is for the ground vehicles to look both ways before crossing.  Add into the mix, it was foggy and misting at the time.  Lot of blame to place.  Except on the two dead pilots.  Not sure what they could have done to save themselves.

I hear ATC say Go Around but if the plane had already touched down and was slowing....what can you do.

Edit.  Maybe the "Go Around" command was for another aircraft.

A lot of the professional pilots on social media are giving him a (deserved) pass because he was 1) working the tower alone, 2) handling over 10 aircraft at once, 3) dealing with rain, fog, and poor visibility, 4) managing another aircraft in trouble on the ground (hence the firetrucks rolling across the runways), and 5) talking with those fire trucks on a different frequency than the others, including the Canadian Express Jet. 

It was total information overload, and like that Frontier pilot (who saw the collision) told him, "you did the best you could."  The failure is systemic, and 100% Uncle Sam's fault for putting him, the airplanes and their crew and passengers, and fire trucks in that situation.

Who were the Air Canada pilots killed in LaGuardia plane crash?

The Air Canada pilot and co-pilot who were killed in the ground collision at LaGuardia Airport late Sunday have been identified as Antoine Forest and Mackenzie Gunther.

The two pilots were flying an Air Canada Express CRJ-900 regional jet operated by Jazz Aviation, Air Canada's regional partner.

Jeannette Gagnier, the great aunt of Forest, told The Associated Press that he always wanted to be a pilot. The small city of Coteau-du-Lac in southwestern Quebec also identified Forest, saying in an online post that the pilot was originally from the community.

Gunther was identified as the first officer on the flight in an online obituary posted by Seneca Polytechnic, where the young pilot graduated from the Honours Bachelor of Aviation Technology program in 2023.

Gunther joined Jazz Aviation following graduation and began his professional flying career, according to the obituary.

“Seneca sends our deepest condolences to Mr. Gunther’s family and friends, and to his former colleagues and professors,” the obituary said. “He will be deeply missed.”

Some passengers aboard the flight have said that the pilots’ actions before the deadly impact likely saved the lives of those on board.

"Looking back on it, the pilot did the best thing he could,” passenger Jack Cabot said. “He hit the brakes as hard as he could, and he knew it was going to be at the cost of his own life."

Passenger Clément Lelièvre told The Associated Press that the pilots braked extremely hard just as the plane touched down, crediting their “incredible reflexes” with saving lives.

Investigators have yet to publicly confirm their identities.

The union representing the pilots on Monday released a statement calling the loss of the two pilots a “profound tragedy.”

“These pilots dedicated their careers to the safe transport of passengers, and we are all thinking of their families, loved ones, and colleagues at Jazz Aviation during this devastating time,” Capt. Jason Ambrosi, president of the Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), said.

Air Canada CEO Michael Rousseau on Monday said he was “deeply saddened by the loss,” and cautioned that many details remain unclear as the investigation unfolds.

That's what I thought.

The same controller was apparently running both because of staff shortages, which apparently is a common practice at LaGuardia.  The NTSB is interviewing him today, so we'll find out soon what was going on up there.

Here's further analysis from one of the top pilots on social media.  The odor problem with the United Airlines flight on the other side of the airport was occupying much of the controller's attention, and that was where the fire trucks were going.

He won't.  Context is everything.  He was also dealing with an emergency with another plane, and he did try to stop the lead fire truck from moving onto the runway, but it was too late.  Hence, the Frontier pilot's comforting comment that he did everything he could.

Brings to mind the controller who caused the 1991 LAX accident...

With that said, I REALLY like the NTSB chairwoman Jennifer Homendy.  She seems to be super competent, unflappable, and totally pissed off about how dysfunctional and hollowed out FAA has become.  Probably one of the very few impressive agency heads in the federal government.  You can tell exactly how angry she is by watching how she twitches her left pinky while giving her updates and taking questions from the media.  She's tough as nails!

This is what I am talking about and the NTSB chair has apparently already seen a push for charges against the ATC.

Bureaucratic managers never take the fall for their maladministration or outright incompetence. They always blame someone who doesn't have any real power.

Despite the NTSB woman getting in front of this I still won't be surprised if someone brings charges against the ATC so as to provide a sacrifice for the media and the public.

Posted that to which you responded BEFORE I heard the audio conversation between the tower and the firetruck.

Guess it matters what the visibility was into the fog/mist...but heard the jet was rolling at about 30mph upon impact.

The jet hit the truck at about 120 mph.  The passengers heard the brakes suddenly squeal after landing hard and the pilot throwing the thrusters into reverse just before impact.
