OMG.  :silly:

I don't know what possessed a Japanese reporter to question an American President about "surprise attacks", but Trump's response was perfect, and clearly done gently with no disrespect to the PM of what is today a very different and allied nation. 

He really "zeroed" in on that one.

Thursday on MS NOW’s “Deadline,” host Nicolle Wallace said President Donald Trump was a “profound idiot” during his Oval Office meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

A reporter asked, “In Japan, and U.S. are a very good friends but one question. Why didn’t you tell U.S. allies in Europe and Asia like Japan about the war before taking it on? So we are very confused about it in Japan.”

Trump said, “Well, one thing, you don’t want to signal too much when we go in. We went in very hard and we didn’t tell anyone about it because we wanted surprise. Who knows better about surprise than Japan? Why didn’t you tell me about Pearl Harbor? Okay, right. You know, he’s asking me. No you believe in surprise I think much more so than us.”

Wallace said, “I struggle every minute of every day with platforming him, one, I should do it all day because it shows what a profound idiot he is.”

She added, “But two, we were on the other sides. This is a question about why didn’t you read in your allies and he says, we didn’t know what our adversary was going to do.”

It was easily the most memorable moment a US president has had alongside a Japanese prime minister since George HW Bush threw up on Kiichi Miyazawa.

Nope, I rarely paid attention or watched the news back then.  Just as I rarely watch TV now.   :shrug:

CNN host Jake Tapper slammed President Donald Trump’s attempt at humor during a White House briefing Thursday.

A reporter asked why Trump hadn’t informed U.S. allies before striking Iran. Trump said he wanted the attack to be a complete surprise and added that Japan understands the element of surprise, joking that he hadn’t been warned about Pearl Harbor.

“Why didn’t you tell U.S. allies…about the war before attacking Iran?” one reporter asked.

Hey Jake!  That wasn't a joke. Take a brief trip out to the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor sometime to find out what a laugh it is, A-hole.

(I took my son there once.  He was struck by the fact that there was an Arizona flag on display when we first walked in.  I told him to look at all the people in the Memorial, and know that out of all of them, he was probably the only person actually born in Arizona.  Believe it or not, there were quite a few Japanese.)

I didn't get to see that!  Before the short shuttle boat ride to the Memorial there was a video presentation (narrated by Meryl Streep I believe) about the attack on Pearl Harbor and Hickam Barracks that was very moving, as was the large marble wall with the names of the 2,000+ Sailors entombed below.
