Arrests Made After Islamic Extremists Toss Nail Bombs At Protesters, Police In NYC

Two suspected Islamic extremists have been arrested for allegedly tossing nail bombs at Christian protesters not far from Gracie Mansion, the official residence of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

The event unfolded during dueling protests, with one group demonstrating against what they described as the “Islamic Takeover of New York City” or “anti-Islamification,” organized by controversial right-wing activist Jake Lang. That event drew roughly 25 to 30 participants.

A larger group of about 125 counter-protesters gathered in opposition, leading to tensions that escalated into physical altercations. The demonstrations began around 11 a.m. Eastern Time, with initial clashes between the two groups starting not long after.

Approximately 30 minutes after the event started, a man emerged from the group of counter protesters and tossed what appeared to be an explosive device towards Lang’s group. The object landed in a crosswalk near police officers, producing flames and smoke before striking a barrier and extinguishing itself.

The suspect — identified as 18-year-old Amir Balat — then reportedly retrieved a second similar device from a 19-year-old accomplice, lit it, and dropped it along East End Avenue. The devices were described by authorities as smaller than a football, wrapped in black tape, and containing nuts, bolts, screws, and a hobby fuse.

One dramatic photo from the scene shows a device landing close to a group of New York City Police Department (NYPD) officers. Balat also appears to have yelled “Allah Akbar” before tossing the first device.

NYPD Releases Chilling Details On Explosive Device Thrown At Christian Protesters

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) confirmed that the device lobbed at a group of Christian anti-Islam protesters — which was thrown by an 18-year-old man who shouted “Allahu Akbar” — was indeed an explosive device capable of serious bodily harm. The announcement comes after terrorist sympathizers attempted to claim the incident was a “hoax.”

New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that the device was indeed an improvised explosive device (IED) that could have killed several protesters and NYPD officers.

“The NYPD Bomb Squad has conducted a preliminary analysis of a device that was ignited and deployed at a protest yesterday and has determined that it is not a hoax device or a smoke bomb. It is, in fact, an improvised explosive device that could have caused serious injury or death,” Tisch confirmed in an X post. Tisch further noted that testing is being conducted on a second device, which was lobbed at a group of NYPD officers.

“I want to again thank the brave members of the NYPD who ran towards the danger without hesitation and quickly apprehended the suspects,” she added. Sunday’s confirmation came after an initial investigation by the NYPD Bomb Squad, which analyzed the device recovered at the scene.

The charges include providing material support to a terrorist organization and using a weapon of mass destruction.

In case you missed it, on Saturday, March 7, an anti-Islam protest gathered outside Gracie Mansion — the official residence of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani — when two homemade improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were thrown toward the protesters.

The devices contained triacetone triperoxide or TATP, a volatile homemade explosive often called "mother of Satan," as well as nuts, bolts, and screws. They were ignited but failed to fully detonate, creating smoke and chaos. Thankfully, no one was injured. A third device was later found near a vehicle the alleged terrorists drove, sparking evacuations at nearby apartment buildings.

Given how careful Bondi has been to have iron-clad cases before prosecuting, the FBI must have 50 billion videos of these wannabe terrorists. This also over-trumps,  , any effort by NYC DAs or Mamdani to play catch-and-release and/or under-charging games.

The Gracie Mansion counterprotesters accused of throwing homemade bombs came to New York with a powerful powder explosive nicknamed “Mother of Satan,” a notebook filled with handwritten notes — and a plan to go “bigger” than the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, federal prosecutors said Monday.

Ibraham Kayumi, 19, and Emir Balat, 18, were radicalized by ISIS and bent on destruction when they arrived at an “Americans Against Islamification” protest staged by Jan. 6 rioter and right-wing provocateur Jake Lang Saturday afternoon, police and the feds allege. The teens live in Pennsylvania.

The duo had two devices ready to go with a third left behind in their car, police and federal prosecutors said. Bayat allegedly lit and hurled a duct-tape-wrapped mason jar with a fuse and triacetone triperoxide, the hallmark explosive seen in bombings around the world, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a Monday press conference at Gracie Mansion.

The device landed near Lang, members of his group and a nearby Daily News reporter covering the protest, but didn’t explode. Kayumi handed Bayat a second device, but Bayat dropped it as he tried to run off, Tisch said.

After his arrest, when law enforcement agents asked Balat if he had hoped to accomplish something akin to the Boston Marathon bombing, he replied, “No, even bigger. It was only three deaths.”

ALBANY – Gov. Kathy Hochul condemned “both” sides following the ISIS-inspired attempted terrorist attack at an anti-Muslim protest outside Gracie Mansion.

Moments after Hochul posted a statement acknowledging the “terrorist attack” by two allegedly self-radicalized Islamist teenagers, she quickly jumped to also blame Saturday’s hateful protest, organized by far-right influencer Jake Lang.

“We condemn both. Neither belongs in New York,” Hochul told reporters after an unrelated event in Albany Monday.

“I reject hate in all of its forms. I reject the hate that launched this,” she said, when pressed on how important she considered the accused bomb-throwers’ motivations.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani finally decried the ISIS-inspired actions of two teenagers who tried to detonate bombs outside Gracie Mansion, calling it a “heinous act of terrorism” — but still stopped short of calling out radical Islam in the wake of the failed, potentially deadly attack.

“Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi have been charged with committing a heinous act of terrorism and proclaiming their allegiance to ISIS,” Hizzoner said in a statement Monday afternoon, after a five-count federal complaint was unsealed against the two supporters of the Islamic State extremist group.
