Teacher and her daughter, 13, killed after tornado sucked their CAR into the air ...as storms rip through the heart of the US and places 32 million Americans under alert

A violent tornado which ripped through western Oklahoma lifted a vehicle into the air, killing a teacher and her teenage daughter.

Jodie Owens, 47, and her daughter Lexi, 13, were found dead late on Thursday night inside their van near a highway intersection outside Fairview in Major County, authorities said.

Officials believe the deaths were caused by the deadly tornado that struck as a powerful storm system still battering swathes of the country unleashed destructive winds, large hail and multiple twisters across the region.

Around 32 million Americans currently are under some form of extreme weather alert as forecasters track a volatile weather pattern stretching from North Texas to the Great Lakes.

More than seven million people are in the highest threat zone for severe weather spanning parts of Missouri, Oklahoma and Nebraska, with nearly 25 million more under a broader risk area that included Dallas, Oklahoma City and Milwaukee.

In Michigan, at least three people were killed after a large tornado tore through the Union Lake area, about 125 miles west of Detroit on Friday.

Officials are urging residents to prepare shelter plans and monitor alerts as they warned of tennis ball–sized hail and potentially deadly gusts.

'The greatest potential for a few strong tornadoes and very large hail should exist across eastern portions of Oklahoma/Kansas/Nebraska into western Arkansas/Missouri and southern Iowa,' an alert from the National Weather Service said.

Death toll climbs as multi-vortex tornadoes rip through America's heartland with almost 70 million people under severe weather warning

At least eight people have been killed after a series of monster tornadoes ripped through the heartland of the US which forecasters warned could be set to continue.

The twisters began Thursday as part of a volatile system stretching from the southern Plains all the way to the Great Lakes which wreaked havoc across multiple states.

Almost 70 million Americans are currently under alert for some form of extreme weather heading into the weekend sparking fears of more devastation to come.

Among the victims so far are a teacher and her 13-year-old daughter who were killed in Fairview, Oklahoma, after their car was sucked into a tornado.

A further two people were confirmed dead on Friday 175 miles away in the city of Beggs after they were caught in the destructive winds. Eyewitnesses shared images showing multi-vortex twisters barreling through the region.

Meanwhile four people were killed in southwestern Michigan as powerful tornadoes shredded homes, ripped roofs into the sky and wrapped debris around power lines in scenes of widespread devastation.

Three deaths were confirmed in Branch County where a tornado dubbed the 'Godzilla of twisters' by observers tore through the Union Lake area near Union City.

A fourth person was confirmed dead after a tornado hit in the Edwardsburg area, according to Cass County Sheriff Clint Roach.

Meteorologists are warning millions of Americans to brace for a dangerous storm system expected to sweep across a huge stretch of the country Friday, bringing the threat of tornadoes, damaging hail and hurricane-force wind gusts.

Forecasters say parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin could be in the bull’s-eye as the system intensifies, with wind gusts potentially hitting 80 mph and storms capable of producing large hail and tornadoes.

The threat comes after severe weather already unleashed damaging winds, hail and tornadoes from Texas into Kansas through Thursday night. In northern Oklahoma, authorities said a mother and daughter were killed after powerful winds and a tornado struck the area.

Meteorologist Matthew Cappucci of MyRadar warned that Friday could deliver the worst impacts of the outbreak.

“Friday, March 6, 2026 could feature the season’s first widespread severe weather threat along I-35 in classic “Tornado Alley”,” he wrote.

“The main hazards are large hail up to hen egg size and damaging winds, but there’s a decent chance of some tornadoes too. If you have Friday evening/night plans, have a way to stay abreast of changing weather conditions.”

Forecasters said the severe threat remains at a Level 3 of 5 on Friday as the dryline pushes farther east across the central U.S. The risk is expected to increase as winds strengthen in the lower atmosphere, creating conditions that can help storms rotate and intensify quickly.
