California gas crisis risks sending prices above $8 a gallon and forcing drivers to ration fuel: lawmakers
By Anthony Blair
Published March 5, 2026, 10:13 p.m. ET

Gavin Newsom’s green agenda and global oil turmoil will risk sending California’s gas prices above a wallet-crushing $8 a gallon — potentially returning drivers to the desperate fuel rationing not seen since the 1970s, state lawmakers and industry experts warned.

With drivers in the Golden State already facing the highest gas prices in the US, Southern California state Sen. Suzette Valladares has urged the governor to scrap California’s cap-and-invest program that charges oil makers for carbon emissions. She dubbed Newsom’s program the “cap-and-tax” scheme, and warned that closing any further oil refineries in the state could trigger economic collapse.

“It’s not scaremongering at all,” Valladares told The California Post of a report from the USC Marshall School of Business that found gas prices could reach $8 a gallon by the end of 2026.

I haven't been out today but I filled up yesterday and gas was $2.86.   We have an advantage here as we are supplied by the Chevron Terminal Panama City on the Gulf of America.

What did People's Democratic Republic of Kalifornia expect to happen?

Dem Kommies don't undertsand how Econ 101 Supply & Demand works.

They believe the Government can provide inifinite supply so long as there's other people's money to steal.

Yesterday gas lines at one station had very long lines -- never figured out what the draw was. Panic buying I guess.

Gas around here is now around $3.40/gal  - I filled up last week for about $2.91 before Iran was hit.  My daughter bought gas two days after and it was at $3.12.

It's not going to get any cheaper.

The obvious -- Will CA ever change?  Under Newsom, definitely not.

$8 a gallon gas? Where? This AM at a gas station I drove by heading for work, the price of Regular was $4.499. The Chevron station diagonally across the street that is always ~$1 per gallon was ... ~$1 per gallon higher. In my childhood home town, Woodland, CA (Yolo County), lots of stations were between $4.10 and $4.40 per gallon. These prices are similar or still a bit lower that December 2024 prices.

Sorry California-haters, the NYP was Chicken-Littling, finding a high price somewhere and misrepresenting it as typical.

They’re not saying it’s $8,  but that it could be by the end of 2026.

@PeteS in CA     I don't hate the people in CA.  I just hate what the gov't has done to the state.

If you really, really want to find what CA gas prices are, you can go here, https://www.gasbuddy.com/ (which is what I did for the prices in Woodland). I just checked three towns I expect to have high prices (because distribution geography and past experience). One had a price similar to where I live in San Jose, one had no recent reports, and the third was $5.599 per gallon.

Like I posted, for the foreseeable future, the NYP is Chicken-Littling.

Got news for ya.
The next governor (assuming dem-communist) will be WORSE.

It's the new trend. The leftist/communists have initiated a new downward spiral:
Every officeholder will be replaced -- by someone even more leftist/communist, and radical...

California consistently has the highest prices in the nation no? If I were Californian I'd be asking why, personally.
