Debuting in 2000 and created by the Wayans family, Scary Movie took aim at the most popular horror films of the time and poked fun at many of the tropes of the genre. Hits like Scream, The Blair Witch Project, and I Know What You Did Last Summer were lambasted with hilarious low-brow humor, and Scary Movie kicked off a spoof movie trend that continued throughout the Aughts.Though critics were cold toward it, Scary Movie was a bona fide blockbuster and grossed nearly $300 million against a budget of $20 million (via Box Office Mojo). Sequels were produced across the rest of the 2000s and though every Scary Movie entry had bright spots, they generally faded in quality until the lackluster release of 2013's Scary Movie 5. To make matters worse, Scary Movie inspired a host of other spoof movies that diluted the genre until it became a parody of itself.
