Texas Democrat James Talarico's website once promoted his support for "trans kids" and "bold, progressive ideas." That was then. Around the time he launched his Senate campaign in a state that hasn't elected a Democrat to the upper chamber since 1988, that changed, a Washington Free Beacon review found. Today, as Talarico tries to break the Texas Democrats' dry spell, his campaign website makes no mention of his "progressive" values.

As a state lawmaker representing a deep-blue Austin district, Talarico was not shy about broadcasting his left-wing views. On his site's homepage, the 37-year-old said he was "not afraid to stand up to Republican extremism" and boasted about leading "the fight against their efforts to bully trans kids, ban books, whitewash our history curriculum, gut public education with a private school voucher scam, and force their Christian nationalist agenda onto the people of Texas." The site's "Accomplishments" section, meanwhile, presented Talarico as a champion of "Bold, Progressive Legislation."

The comments surfaced in a 2021 podcast discussion on faith, activism, race, and gender identity.

U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico once described himself as a “Christian who hates Christianity” during a podcast appearance with a progressive theologian known for advocating transgender and queer theology.

The comments were highlighted Tuesday in a report by The Federalist, which unearthed a March 2021 appearance by Talarico on the Activist Theology podcast.

Talarico, an Austin Democrat now running against Attorney General Ken Paxton for the U.S. Senate, frequently speaks about his Christian faith on the campaign trail and has built a national profile as a progressive Christian voice within the Democrat Party.

During the podcast, however, Talarico offered a striking description of his relationship with Christianity.

“I always think of myself as a Christian who hates Christianity, right?” Talarico said.

The podcast was hosted by Roberto Che Henderson-Espinoza, a theologian who identifies as transgender and nonbinary and whose work focuses on progressive and queer interpretations of Christianity.

According to The Federalist, Talarico expressed admiration for Henderson-Espinoza’s work, saying he was a “BIG fan” and that the author’s book “Activist Theology” had been an inspiration to him.

Left-wing Texas Senate candidate James Talarico says he opposes defunding the police and has a "proven track record" of supporting law enforcement. Perhaps that is true now, but in 2022, he called to slash police and prison budgets and redirect the money to social programs, a move he argued would "make prisons obsolete," video footage shows.

Talarico's remarks came during a 2022 speech he delivered to a group of Texas inmates graduating from a high school diploma program. After approvingly quoting the prominent prison abolitionist Ruth Wilson Gilmore—Talarico described her as an "anti-prison activist" who said "prisons are a catchall solution to our social problems"—he laid out his vision for a "world without prisons."

"Prisons allow us to ignore the consequences of systemic racism and global capitalism," Talarico said. "If we took just half of what we spent on wars, prisons, and policing and spent it on education, health care, and jobs, we could make prisons obsolete."

...   Talarico is articulating a worldview that has become increasingly fashionable among progressive Christians:

    Christianity is wonderful. Christians are the problem.

    Jesus is great. It's the Church that has lost its way.

    The Sermon on the Mount is inspiring. The Bible's actual moral teachings are on the wrong side of history.

For many of these people, "Christianity" has come to mean everything they dislike about the faith: traditional doctrine, biblical sexual ethics, church authority, creeds, historic orthodoxy, and the accumulated wisdom of two thousand years of Christian teaching.

Those things are treated as unfortunate baggage that must be discarded so that the supposedly radical and revolutionary message of Jesus can finally be recovered.

The dilemma for such a position is that Jesus Himself never made such distinctions.

    Jesus established a Church.

    Jesus appointed apostles.

    Jesus affirmed the authority of Scripture.

    Jesus spoke repeatedly about sin, repentance, judgment, obedience, marriage, and holiness.

In fact, many of the teachings that modern progressives find most unpalatable are not inventions of the Church at all. They come directly from Jesus Himself.

Modern progressives like Talarico often claim to be rescuing Jesus from Christianity. In reality, they are creating a Jesus more compatible with contemporary political sensibilities than the one revealed in Scripture.  ...

State Rep. James Talarico, the Democratic U.S. Senate nominee, raised a staggering $30 million from April through June, his campaign announced Wednesday — more than triple the amount brought in by his Republican opponent, Attorney General Ken Paxton.

The haul is a record total for a U.S. Senate candidate in the second quarter of an election year, Talarico’s campaign said, noting he has now raised more than $70 million from over 1.5 million donations, including 780,000 individual contributors, since launching his bid in September.

“I’m honored to stand alongside more than 780,000 neighbors who are tired of being divided into teams — red versus blue, left versus right, rural versus urban,” Talarico, D-Austin, said in a statement. “We are uniting Texans onto one team to change this broken, corrupt political system and bring down costs for working families.”

Earlier Wednesday, Paxton’s campaign said he had raised over $9 million in the second quarter of the year — a personal best and the largest amount announced by any non-incumbent Senate GOP candidate this cycle, per his campaign. Both campaigns had yet to file their second-quarter reports, due July 15 to the Federal Election Commission, identifying their donors and how much cash they have on hand.

Talarico’s mammoth fundraising has boosted Democratic hopes that he could become the first Democrat to turn a Senate seat blue since 1988, particularly against Paxton, the Republican nominee who has historically posted relatively weak fundraising totals. Some of Talarico’s fundraising edge could be neutralized, however, by a recent Supreme Court ruling that empowers Paxton to tap into the national GOP’s deep coffers.

Recent public polling has found the race essentially tied.
