Iranian Council Names New Supreme Leader, Reports Claim

Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Iran’s slain Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has reportedly been selected to replace his father, according to Iranian opposition media.

Iranian International reported Tuesday that Mojtaba was tapped by Iran’s Assembly of Experts to assume control of the country. The claim was quickly picked up by Israeli media but has not been confirmed by Iran’s state-run outlets.

In the immediate aftermath of Saturday’s strike that killed the elder Khamenei, Mojtaba was initially rumored to be among roughly 40 senior regime figures who were also killed. That report now appears to have been incorrect.

The reported appointment comes as questions have swirled for days over who would succeed Ali Khamenei, who ruled Iran for decades and maintained a fiercely anti-Western posture while tightening control at home.

The Assembly of Experts, a powerful clerical body responsible for appointing and overseeing the supreme leader, conducts its deliberations largely behind closed doors. Iranian officials have not publicly confirmed the reported decision.

If confirmed, Mojtaba’s elevation would keep leadership within the Khamenei family at a time of heightened tensions and uncertainty inside the Islamic Republic.

The Basij Resistance Force (formally
Sâzmân-e Basij-e Mostaz'afin) is a volunteer paramilitary organization under Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), founded by Ruhollah Khomeini in 1980. It acts as an internal security militia, suppressing protests and enforcing morality laws, with estimated membership ranging from hundreds of thousands up to 1 million. As of July 2019, Gholamreza Soleimani is the commander.

Per CBS, U.S. Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut has said that U.S. President Donald J. Trump has "refused to take off the table the insertion of ground troops" inside Iran during a senatorial briefing today.

That's been Trump's answer all day to anyone who asked him. 

I don't see how the regime is successfully changed without ground troops --- both to sweep away the remaining "debris" ---  and then help keep the peace through the security vacuum created by the regime change.

I only hope that the U.S. doesn't hang the Kurds out to dry (again).  Not sure why they would trust the U.S. (again) but if they help topple the Mullahs then good on them.

The US and Israel, which previously used AI to identify targets in Gaza, launched almost 900 strikes on Iranian targets in the first 12 hours alone, during which Israeli missiles killed Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Academics studying the field say AI is collapsing the planning time required for complex strikes – a phenomenon known as “decision compression”, which some fear could result in human military and legal experts merely rubber-stamping automated strike plans.

In 2024 the San Francisco-based Anthropic deployed its model across the US Department of War and other national security agencies to speed up war planning. Claude became part of a system developed by the war-tech company Palantir with the Pentagon to “dramatically improve intelligence analysis and enable officials in their decision-making processes”.

“The AI machine is making recommendations for what to target, which is actually much quicker in some ways than the speed of thought,” said Craig Jones, a senior lecturer in political geography at Newcastle University and an expert in kill chains. “So you’ve got scale and you’ve got speed, you’re [carrying out the] assassination-style strikes at the same time as you’re decapitating the regime’s ability to respond with all the aerial ballistic missiles. That might have taken days or weeks in historic wars. [Now] you’re doing everything at once.”

The latest AI systems can rapidly analyse mountains of information on potential targets from drone footage to telecommunications interceptions as well as human intelligence. Palantir’s system uses machine learning to identify and prioritise targets and recommend weaponry, accounting for stockpiles and previous performance against similar targets. It also uses automated reasoning to evaluate legal grounds for a strike.
