Politico: Republicans are freaking out over Texas Senate race

Republicans are freaking out over Texas Senate race

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is the man to beat ahead of Tuesday’s primary — and could put Senate Republicans’ majority at risk

By Liz Crampton, Jordain Carney, Samuel Benson, Alex Gangitano and Adam Wren02/26/2026 04:45 AM EST

With just days until Texas’ primary, Republicans in Washington are growing more alarmed that their increasingly vicious intraparty contest could cost them a must-win Senate seat.

Sen. John Cornyn appears to be headed to an expensive and nasty 10-week runoff against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, with a strong chance that Paxton wins the nomination even after national Republicans spent months airing his dirty laundry all over the Texas airwaves in an effort to boost Cornyn.

“Honestly, if you look at the polling in a general election setting, I don’t think it’s outside the realm of possibility that the seat [flips], depending on who the Democrats nominate,” said Senate Majority Leader John Thune, when asked about the possibility that Republicans could lose the race if Cornyn, who he endorsed, is not the party’s nominee.

If Cornyn loses the primary, Senate Republicans worry they could be forced to spend hundreds of millions of dollars that could otherwise go toward key battleground races in expensive states like North Carolina, Georgia or Michigan, complicating their path toward holding Senate control.

One day away, and the pollster's take..;.?

2026 Texas Senate - Republican Primary   Emerson
Paxton 40, Cornyn 36, Hunt 17

2026 Texas Senate - Republican Primary   Quantus Insights
Paxton 43, Cornyn 38, Hunt 16

2026 Texas Senate - Republican Primary   Chism/Blueprint
Paxton 42, Cornyn 30, Hunt 14

2026 Texas Senate - Republican Primary   University of Texas
Paxton 36, Cornyn 34, Hunt 26

Last 2 polls on the dim side have Jazzy fading,,,,  with one her behind by 5%, and another by 12%.

Yeah, I am up there with opinion that polls suck.  But out of this muck are 3 bits of wisdom.

(1) High high percentage chance that the GOP race, which has been disgustedly negative will go to a runoff.  With more disgusting slime, money spent, and alienating voters.
(2) Looks like the perceived (cough cough) dim moderate has a good chance to win his primary
(3) Add 1 and 2, and it makes Texas winnable for the dims, unless we sort this shit out quick,.

The ONLY way Texas is winnable for the Dems is massive election fraud.

Got to disagree, if this dim puke fakes it and comes across taking the faux Spamburger approach,..... then add the fact of a primary and runoff of ultimate slime, including the wasted bucks?   It is winnable for them.

Don't forget,..  In the last off electoral season (2018) (similar circumstance), TX Senatorial campaign, Cruz eeked out only a 2 1/2% win over ultra-lefty Beto.

Right now, I have this at 50-50, and blame squarely on the campaigns being run.  I hate all 3 of 'em.  And will have to hold my nose this November.

Republicans must have seen their shadows.  This is why Republicans should never go outside on sunny days.

Nope....  just suffering from W's lingering stench.

I'd say easy a 1/3 in our House/Senate GOP would don their kneepads if he made it to the next session.

Red sirens need to be glaring at 110 db.  This could easily be the dims's 51st Senator come January 2027.  And it really didn't need to happen, if Trump would have endorsed one of the 3 in the beginning,.  I hope I am wrong, but I see another Spamburger like event potentially happening.

Wow!  58 years.  Congratulations to you and your bride @Bigun

Live in  harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly, do not claim to be wiser than you are.  Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.  If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.
